Atlanta, GA Parks

Have a convention downtown Atlanta in March and looking for a place to park my RV and drive the toad to the convention. Don't need a fancy park, but don't want to stay at a dump. Any suggestions?

Most suggest Stone Mountain but that may be across the city from the convention. There is one near Dobbs A/F base but it isn't very nice.

There are places near Lake Lanier but that is a commute.

We travel to the Atlanta area 3 or 4 times a year.Nothing much close to down town. We stay at Alatoona Landing, but it is 45 mins. from down town. Stone Mountain is really nice, but also about 45 mins from down town and costs more. Most of the rest we have looked at aren't very nice. There is one COE campground on Lake Alatoona that is open year round called McKinney Campground, but it is usually very busy. Still about the same travel time.

There's nothing near downtown Atlanta. There is a park in Marietta, but it's been 15 years since I've been there, so don't know the current condition. There are some state parks on Lake Lanier in Cumming, or Twin Lakes RV park in Cumming, and you could drive to the Northside station and take Marta into downtown Atlanta. Driving into downtown during rush hour traffic would be a nightmare.

If it is within 45 minutes from Atlanta, it's a dump, full of nasty full timing trailer parkers. Allatoona Landing or Stone Mountain are your best bet. With the current traffic situation on I75 and the new Braves stadium, I would choose Stone Mountain.

Well all this does not sound inviting.

So is there a good place to park/store the RV and then go and get a hotel for a couple nights while downtown.

Do yourself a favor and stay at Stone Mtn state park. The campground is gated inside the gated state park. Clean, safe and fun. May be a little farther to drive to the west side, but you can drive straight down Hwy 78 to the center of Atlanta. Traffic is always a nightmare around 285. That's why I'm leaving at 4:30am to head to the Tampa RV show in the morning. Can't stand the way they drive around here. Be ready to either sit it traffic or drive with your petal to the metal. No in between. Oh, and have fun while in our state.

Thanks all,
I was debating between Stone Mtn, and Atlanta South RV and you guys backed up what I was feeling. I do want to thank Chuck for his dry camping suggestion as I may go that route. I know Chicago McCormick has this setup and was wondering if Atlanta had anything. We will be working the show hard for 3 days so we wont be in the RV much. Not looking forward to Atlanta traffic either.

Bringing an old post back to life

Wife is going to a night show at Truist Park (AKA Braves Stadium) at the end of August. Any suggestions where to park the coach? I'll be in the coach with a dog or two don't mind running generator.

COE parks are out as they lock the front gate after 10:30 PM and she most likely won't be back until after midnight.

Mixed reviews for the other RV parks in the area. I might go with a cracker barrel / Walmart or some other Wallydock scenario.

Looks like the area around GA World Congress has built up - is it still a good spot for a 45 foot coach? Satellite view looks like it might be a challenge getting there.
