Looking for a c.g. directly on the beach on the Atlantic. N.C. is as far south as we'd be willing to drive. A short walk to the beach is a must and a view of the water from the site would be a bonus. We prefer a bit of privacy on a site that's a decent size. Any info greatly appreciated, or direction to other resources for info also. thanks.

On the coast walking distance and view of ocean. If you are willing to camp with out hookups Assateague Island below Ocean City Md National Seashore all dry camping 40 sites just behind the primary dune line not on top of each other cold showers pit toliets, the MD State Park more sites some electric hot showers but the sites are close to each other. The 4 campgrounds of the Cape*Hatteras National Seashore are all near the beach but all dry camping . Also on Hatteras there are 3 campgrounds with full hookups at Rodanthe the KOA, Camp Hatteras and Ocean Waves on/near the beach. You did not say when you are planning this trip summer can be hot and buggy, the only shade is what you bring, short tent stakes do not hold in the sand. One other choice is the Delaware Seashore close but not on the beach with hookups. If you are driving down the DelMarVA the parking lot at the North end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is good for overnight stops.

thanks, Joe. We're looking at 2nd week of Aug. Expected hot - but with water right there, no problem. Buggy? Going to check out your c.g.'s. Might be getting late to book something, though.

As I'm giving this idea more thought, isn't August the beginning of hurricane season?

June is the beginning of hurricane season. The Holiday Trav-L-Park Resort in Emerald Isle is one of the best run campgrounds on the east coast. I've watched them ride by in the mornings and clean the street signs. It's a little pricey but a great place to stay. The campgrounds mentioned on the Outer Banks are good but if you're a "beach person" who doesn't like dealing with mosquitos and very large flies you may not be happy. The Emerald Isle beaches are wide, clean and you can wade out and swim on a nice beach.
