NY will have a bunch of great stops - Letchworth State Park, Finger Lakes, Cooperstown, Howe Caverns.

If you cut north a bit, go to King Arthur Flour in Norwich, VT and fill up on sweets.

Take 2 & 20 across IN, OH, PA, and NY to Albany. It's a nice mix of 2 and 4 lane roads through the back country with a taste of Amish in IN, Lake Erie shoreline in OH, and wineries in PA and Finger lakes in NY. Best of all, no tolls and decent roads.

I concur. From Albany, my recommendation is go east on NY 7 to Bennington VT and then north on Vt 7a to Manchester then east on VT 30 to VT 100 at Londonderry. North on Vt 100 to Duxbury and then US 2 east across New Hampshire and Maine.

I have driven this route in the past( Lived in Albany 30 years) and also rode it on a bicycle. I am following the same route from Bennington VT when we go to Maine from NC in July.

If that is too long of a detour VT 9 east to NH 9 to US220 Through Concord NH to Gray ME is an alternative. Concord is pretty built up with a lot of traffic. the rest of that route is pretty good and interesting. (I'm going that way on the return from Bar Harbor)

Be careful wandering off the main roads in Vermont and New Hampshire lots of low clearances and 5 ton bridges.
