Bar Harbor recommended CG

We're headed to Bar Harbor Maine next summer and want to start doing the research and make reservations now to ensure a spot.

What campgrounds do you folks recommend in and around the Bar Harbor area? We have a 40 footer towing a car.

We'll be heading up I 95 north of Boston to get to Bar Harbor and am looking at some interesting places along the coast to visit. Any recommendations??

Tim,

There are two KOAs at Bar Harbor and we picked the wrong one when we were there a couple of years ago. We stayed at the Bar Harbor Woodlands and should have stayed at the Bar Harbor Oceanside. It's pretty pricey but then so is everything else up there. The Woodlands one was okay, but very wooded, tight interior roads and small spaces.

We are staying at the Schoodic Woods portion of Acadia NP from 9/29 - 10/11.
Looking forward to the isolation of that campground. David

We stayed at Hadley's Point Campground. We enjoyed it. The shuttle came to the campground and was very easy to use.

Just returned from there.
Schoodic Woods in Acadia NP is very very very nice if you can get a reservation. Some sItes have 30amp. We stayed at Blackwoods inside the NP. Boondocking Was good with all pull thrus. Schoodic better. We also enjoyed at few days in Lubec at Sunset Point RV Park, right on the Canadian border, beautiful views. We checked out other commercial CGs near Bar Harbor and weren’t impressed.

Thanks Guys, looks like Schoodic Woods will allow you to reserve only 2 months in advance. We'll be there over the July 4th 2022 weekend so I need to know well in advance I can get a reservation. So we'll probably reserve at the Oceanside KOA and if we can get in to Schoodic Woods I'll cancel the KOA.

Any suggestions for interesting things to visit on the way up the Maine coast to Arcadia?

We've been staying at Narrows Too for several years. It's 7 miles or so from the entrance to Acadia NP and another 4-5 to Bar Harbor. Sites are large enough for any size rig. No shade in most of the sites if that's a consideration. FHU. 3 Lobster pounds within walking distance.

I'm from Maine; born and raised in a small rural farm town.

We've been to Maine quite a few times since retirement. Personally I like the Family owned and operated RV Parks/CGs.

When in the Bar Harbor Area we make Timberland Acres our home base. Here's a current link.

Just spent a week at Timberland Acres. Great campground, huge pull through sites and 20 minutes from Acadia. Will be spending a few weeks there next year.

You had mentioned Bar Harbor in your post.... Schoodic is going to be about a 1.5 hour drive to Bar Harbor..... fyi -- it is a beautiful place. If you do go there, another option besides driving to get to Bar Harbor is the ferry from Winter Harbor .

Oh, if your there for the 4th, bar Harbor has a great parade !!!

I absolutely love the Oceanside KOA. We were just there this month. We have been there several times. If you want an oceanside spot you better reserve now. I normally don’t go with the oceanside because they don’t have sewer hookups because you are two feet from the shoreline. Great staff and great place.

Just spent 3 days at Smugglers Den...nice place, nice people. Good walking areas on back roads/trails.

Reports are very, very crowded (whole area) during the season with tough cancelation rules.

Good luck.

We stayed at Hadley's Point Campground. It's 5 miles to Acadia NP entrance and about 8 miles to Bar Harbor. The loop we were in was W/E only, all grass sites and large open grass play field. Pump out service is available. Our site faced east so we had full sun till mid afternoon. All staff we came in contact were friendly and helpful.

We also stayed these last month. Agree, it was nice. They do not have sewer but have a honey pot which comes by the empty your tanks for an extra fee.

Would only caution that if you don't have kids, you should stay away from the playground area which has sites around it. Got a little noisy at times.Click image for larger version
