We always go on the shoulder seasons and stay at Camp Hatteras. I don't know if it's the best or not, but it's the one we first tried and have stuck with it for eight years now.

We stayed at Camp Hatteras in early April this year. Since it is before the tourist season starts, a lot of the shops and restaurants and attractions were still closed for the season, so there wasn't a lot to do. Late April or May is when things start opening up.

NC Outer Banks

We have found early Oct. is great. After school starts the week days are not so crowded yet most of the businesses are still open. The w/e can be busy tho. The weather is still warm unless there is a hurricane off the coast.

Its not so much about the weather...Its about the water. Its freaking cold in the spring. If you want to play in the water, fall is the time to go but you do risk hurricane weather. So far we have been lucky.

I've stayed at obx campground in the Kill Devil Hills area 2 times and at Ocean Waves campground in Waves NC once. I can recommend both.
OBX is quiet and out of the way but nice and clean. Ocean Waves is also nice and clean with the addition of being ocean front and a pool. Ocean Waves is my favorite just because it's ocean front and I like that area of the outer banks best. Going back to ocean waves this sept which is my favorite time to be in OBX.

Fall is great, but, weather can be a huge downer. The last two times we've attempted to visit the east coast on October (coastal VA and NC), we've gotten chased out by hurricanes and/or nor'easters. Almost got stranded on Chincoteague Island, VA a couple years ago by a wicked nor'easter. Actually the whole east coast was socked in by that one. I've gotten to be very cautious planning trips out east!
I'm not talking one or two days of rainy weather, I'm talking coastal flooding, a week of rain and wind, and road/causeway closures.
Watch the long range forecasts before going and have a Plan B to implement should the weather interfere.

We were there just a couple of weeks ago ( right after power was restored) and stayed at the KOA which is right next to Camp Hatteras. I'd stay at either one. The KOA had lots of pull through's, was very clean, good service, and even a small very informal place to eat.
