Boondocking in Taos area and Carson National Forest

Hi all,

We would love to spend a few nights in the Taos area in our truck camper. I see there's currently a wildfire burning and I also see that many of the public campsites are closed already, or they are closed due to COVID. Being from the Northeast and completely unfamiliar with the area, I'm wondering if it's still possible to boondock around Taos. I'm specifically wondering about Carson Nat'l forest land. Is a permit required? Anything else to know?

We are self-sufficient and do not need any hookups.

Sorry if these are dumb questions as we're new at this.

Thanks in advance for any help/guidance.

Check out the "cheapRVliving" channel on youtube (link below)
Bob, the channel owner, does a nice job demonstrating how to determine if specific dispersed camping areas are open or not. That said, I've noted some folks commenting that the Feds are delegating final BLM open/close authority to local folks (county/municipality) for final word.

We've stayed with our 40' motorhome on BLM land near Questa, NM - Wild Rivers. North of Questa on 522. On a plateau above the confluence of the Rio Grande River and Red River. Several hiking paths down to the river. Brrr. It's getting cold there!
