Now to find someplace for our visit to Zion. Watchman is full and the other parks appear to be first come, first served. Any recommendations for something outside that park? Given how full things seem to be I'm a bit hesitant to risk a first come, first served campground.

We stayed at this park in Kanab and drove to Zion a couple of days. Nice little town to visit and also check out Best Friends animal rescue just a few minutes out of Kanab on the way to Zion.

Unless you just want to say you've 'seen' the national parks then yes, stay at one place and do a day trip to the other. However, you won't be 'experiencing' the national park. It also makes for long days and extra driving time. It's not difficult to move from one area to another and you'll have more time to explore the park. If you're a hiker, definitely do a trail below the rim at Bryce. It's like a fairy wonderland down there and you just can't appreciate it from standing on the top.
I also think staying in Kanab to visit Zion is much too time-consuming. It's just too far. There are closer places in Springdale or Hurricane.
Just my opinion.....

Hmmm... Missed it somehow. Just bringing it up now. Certainly isn't inexpensive but looks very nice. I've just sent them a request to check dates. Thanks for this reference.

The proximity to the park is worth something a little extra IMO. Days spent in the park are long enough without adding a commute on top of that.

Well, we have reservations for Zion River Resort. Thanks for pointing us that direction.
I do think it's "interesting" that on their website you have to give your credit card info just to find out if they have availability and rather than getting back to you with a yes/no, they actually make the reservation for you and then tell you that you can cancel, but it will cost $5.00. In our case I requested a basic back-in site and they automatically reserved a higher cost site because it will fit my RV better. I guess it's nice that they are looking out for us but still seems a bit customer-unfriendly that they would do this and then charge us if we didn't want that option. Oh well...

Bryce Canyon and Zion
I don't recall that being the case the last time ( 3 1/2 years ago ) that we were there. You may want to add that to your review , if you do one on rvparkreviews. Here's a link to their review page.

Debbie MH,
You are missing the most scenic part of Utah if you don't drive Hwy 12 from Bryce to Capital Reef NP. From Springdale to Bryce and back would be a big day if you want to see much of Bryce.

Can't believe Bryce CGs are full. Been there 3 times in season. Never made a reservation.
Always stayed at the North CG. Dry camping. Canyon a few steps away. Sites too small for us in the others.
Rubys is what it is. Close sites, amenities, pricey.

Thanks. We have 7 nights at Zion River Resort - so we might go over to Bryce in our toad and stay in a hotel over that way one night so we can really see Bryce.
Our trip this summer will be 4 months in duration, so we are staying about a week in every location. If we need to take a day trip somewhere to see most of it, we can do that. Thanks for the advice.

Why not just move to the Bryce area? There is so much to see besides the canyon - Hwy 12 is awesome! There's Kodachrome State Park, Calf Creek Falls, Grosvenor Arch, etc.

Is Hwy 12 doable for a 45 ft motorhome plus a toad? For someone who hasn't driven "real mountains"? And would you think spending more time in Bryce would be better than more time at Zion? Thanks, Lynn
