CA to Devilís Tower, Custer, Oshkosh

You can read about the ďhot timeĒ from CA to Devilís Tower in my previous thread ďAlmost ReadyĒ.

Arrived yesterday, Friday, at Custerís Gulch CG. Forget any posts regarding this place at less than four stars. 30-40 feet between sites, grassy, surrounded by forest. Full hookups, 30-50 amps. Very picturesque. Good WiFi throughout the grounds with 4 different zones...office, west, pond, east. Pick the one you are closest too.

Enjoyed Devilís Tower, been there before, but always good to see again. My traveling buddy enjoyed Close Encounters movie, which they show every night outside. About 60 people there watching, some with children, having popcorn, sodas and adult refreshments. I stayed about 20 minutes with my dog. He doesnít like aliens.

From Devilís Tower to Custer is 108 miles, leisurely pace. After hookup (2 pm) guided into my site, we toured Custer State Park...17 mile loop. Not a Buffalo in sight. Some grocery shopping $5.99 NY strip steaks for dinner.

Today decided on breakfast out on patio, with dog in town. Toured Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Needles Highway, etc.

Tomorrow east towards Oshkosh for the EAA Airventure. About 800 miles split into two days driving. Where are we staying tomorrow night? Have no clue.

Stay tuned.

I volunteered in Custer State Park 3 summers in a row a few years ago. If you call the Park Office or Visitor Center they get Buffalo Reports 3 or 4 times a day and can tell you where the Buffalo roam that day.

Arrived in Welcome, MN approximately 100 miles east os South Dakota state line. Nice campground, lots of space between sites, with 50 amp and full hookup...no cable. Checkers Welcome CG, $29 a night with AAA discount. Just an overnight. Did about 200 miles in light/medium rain.

Did about 500 miles today and entered CST in SD. Losing another hour. Tomorrow about 350 to destination. Hoping to get the coach washed before Fond du lac, WI...road mist, especially the toad.

Sounds like a good road trip. I have been to Custers Gulch Campground and yes it is very nice. Also stayed at Rafter J up the road a bit and another great spot.

Got to Fond du lac yesterday around 4 pm. Nice campground. Did get the coach and toad washed at Blue Beacon, Portage, WI. Undercarriage pressure spray, wash, rain-ex, citrus on wheels...$88. Took 15-20 minutes. Happy with their work.

Relaxing today and some grocery/beer runs. Next two days at air show, departing Friday AM.

Which did you like better, Rafter J or Custers Gulch?
