California state campgrounds after Labor Day

We are planning our first big trip west -we live in Illinois but going to Northern California where my son and his family live. I found I can not reserve a campsite in the several state parks we were hoping to stay after Labor Day. They become "first come". Does anyone have a feel for how difficult it might be to get one of those mid to late September. We pull a 32 ft trailer. I know I can reserve a private campground but prefer the state parks if possible.

Unless you come in on a Friday or Saturday you should be alright. Tuesday Wednesday Thursday arrivals are generally good

Where in Northern California? (generally speaking).
North of Mendocino County? North of the Bay Area?

Monterey north. Monterey south is Central Coast. Ventura south maybe Santa Barbara for some to Mexico is Southern.

Very north- Humboldt County. Specifically looking at Patricks Point near Trinidad or Humboldt Redwoods State park near Avenue of the Giants.

After Labor day... IMHO: Chances of finding a vacant site are pretty good.
But a 32' trailer not sure tho. Older 'State Parks' were laid out before RV's er... 'got so big'. Maybe I'll take the motorbike down there and see if bigger RV's are in there.

Ave of Giants... Burlington Campground might be a good one... stays open all year.

Patrick's Point is a wonderful (magical) place. 'Elk Country' (private/Stone Lagoon) has good camping... 'back in the forest'. IMHO: 'Meadow campsites' are too close together.

Agree with others regarding availability on a Friday/Saturday vs Tues/Wed/Thurs. Keep in mind that September/October is often the best months of weather if you are anywhere near the Pacific coast and that extends all the way to Oregon/Washington as well.
