We plan to travel to the Wash. DC area in August. We have looked in directories, Trailer Life, etc. and find the rates are $40-$60. WOW!We plan to be there 4-5 days, and the cost really ads up....on a fixed income. We belong to membership CGs and Passport America, there are non within 100 miles of that area. We have a toad and don't mind driving to a rail station. We are fully-contained so dry camping would not be a problem. We would prefer the south or west side of DC. We would appreciate any information anyone can share. Thanks.

Try Cherry Hill Campground outside DC.. Very nice close to the Metro.

Check out Prince William Travel Trailer Village. It is not fancy but is clean and a good value.

Cherry Hill was a nice CG when I was last there about 6 years ago. The nice part was that the city transit system stopped right at the park just inside the entrance. We did not have to use our car at all. I think it was $5 for day if I remember right.

I second Prince William Travel Trailer Village. About 30 miles south of DC and 15 miles from the subway. We stayed there last fall for 10 days at $25 a night for full hookups. Can't be beat for the DC area. Clean, pull-throughs with lots of shade.

If you don't mind using your generator you might consider Greenbelt National Park off I95 in Maryland. Not sure if it is on the Metro line, but the park is pretty and does accomodate large rigs. One thing, DC is HOT in August. Generator use is allowed, but not sure if allowed for 24 hours or not. But it is a cheaper alternative to private parks.

Cherry Hill is a very nice campground and just off the beltway in northwest area. It's kind of pricey, but worth it. One can get a Grayline tour right in the campground or go outside and get a bus. It's very convenient to most everything because of the access to transit.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions on campgrounds in the DC area. Especially thanks to Bill & Camilla and dgassa for the recommendations on Prince William Travel Trailer Park, Dumfries, Va. We made reservations there for five nights @ $23.78 with the Good Sam discount. They have just the amenities we need for a place to sleep at night and sight-seeing all day. They are just 15 miles from the Metro and 28 miles to the White House.

Forgot to mention, we had checked the rates at Cherry Hill before we posted our question. We have heard it's a very nice CG, but their rates are $44-$60.
