Smile Campgrounds & car hire in Black Hills

Hi everyone,

We're planning on going to the Black Hills for a few days in a 22' motorhome soon. I know that there are lots of roads that aren't very RV friendly so we're thinking of renting a car to help us get around and see all the sites.

Can anyone recommend good campground with a car rental office nearby, or other rental companies that offer a good price?

Thanks.

Jen

We are heading for Black Hills, Mt Rushmore, Rapid City in June. After looking at all CG from Custer and RCA, we decided on the Rapid City KOA as Enterprise rental is close, like three blocks. They will pick you up at GC site and drop you off. Love the convince and very good rates. Happy travels and be safe.

Really enjoyed this one, not sure how close to a rental agency. Enterprise is my choice as they pick you up at your MH. Don't miss the town of Deadwood while you are there.

We are looking at a fall trip to that area and may be staying at the Rafter J Bar park in Hill city or Custer Gulch Park. Either one look good on the web. Leaning toward the Rafter J though. I agree that Enterprise is the way to go.

I know many don't like KOA's but if I remember correctly, when I was there in 2007, you can rent a car at the Hill City KOA. Hill City KOA is a few miles from Mt. Rushmore and easy drive to Custer State Park. While there I also made day trips to Sturgis and Deadwood.

News to me. I roll a 13.1 foot tall 45ft moho and a toad all over the BH area. Of course not Iron Mountain Rd. - the only problem road due to tunnel height.

What have you been reading?

10 years ago we traveled in our Boat. Car rentals are seldom located at Marinas. We found that Enterprise would pick us up and many times from nearby towns causing a several mile trip to get us. When that did not work out many of the new car dealers had rental programs that was priced about the same as any other car rental agency.

Rafter J has a few cars that they rent. The cars also have stickers on them that get you into everything you need a sticker for.

Well, maybe. The big tour buses do it. I don't know the height specifics but they do the tunnel after major manipulating to get straight on to it. Here's a video of one going through.
