Just bought a "new to us" travel trailer this past weekend. Will be taking it to the Redwood Nat'l Forest in N. Calif. this summer and am looking for any recommendations for full service campgrounds. Anybody have any suggestions to offer? Thanks in advance......

Coming back south from Alaska last summer, we stayed in a very nice CG in Klamath, CA. called Klamath River RV. It's off of Hwy. 101 between Klamath and Klamath Glen and is pretty much half way between the North and South side of Redwood NPs. Klamath River RV Park Klamath Californina Redwoods Parks Camping Where the RV, in their site's picture is exactly where we spent 3 days as a base camp...nice view and it's really something to see the sea fog roll through the CG. We drove back up to the north section of the park(we drove through it with the RV and Jeep on the way in), so we went back for a better look-see. We also explored Crescent City as well.

We could very well have spent more time there, but we had been on the road for 4 months and had to visit several other NPs that we missed the summer before last. What a great area to explore(north side and south side of the Park)...you'll enjoy it.

Don't forget to stick a toe into the Pacific.

This KOA is just north of the Redwoods Eureka KOA | Camping in California | KOA Campgrounds. Its a nice little campground that's a short drive to the Redwoods. It actually has some tent sites in the back that are nestled among some HUGE redwoods.

They have a petting zoo, ice cream social in the evenings and a nice little store.

This place is great Ancient Redwoods Resort RV Park, on the Avenue of the Giants and is right in the Heart of the Redwoods. This is another great place at the North end of the Redwoods RV Camping Tent Campsites - Eureka Fortuna Ferndale Redwoods California State Parks

there are a number of full hookup private campgrounds in the Klamath area.
it's probably the best central location in the park.

be aware, there are no state/national campgrounds in the park with any hookups nor many sites for large rigs like yours.

be sure to visit Prairie Creek SP, one of our favorite places on the planet.
take the drive to Fern Canyon and you'll probably see bachelor elk laying on the beach and walking through the Pacific Ocean surf.

Thinking of enjoying the Redwoods this year. If we do, we would drive down 101 all along the Oregon coast for the adventure. (North to South)

Question on the park: better to bring the towed rig (Chevy tracker)? Are there affordable rental options nearby that you like?

Our rig is 24 feet, so were not too long even with the towed. Last year @ Yellowstone we decided to do the drive without the Tracker and rented a rig when we got there for to/from the park.

I think it's a matter of personal preference. When we did the trip last year there were a lot of places that accomodated RV parking. That said, there were also places that would have been difficult at best.

Just wondered why you decided not to take towed vehicle with you?

Personally I'd tow the car but if not towing I'd look at the map and look for larger towns in the areas I thought I might need the rental car and then run google or other seach for rental cars for that town to confirm rentals are available. As you probably know larger towns are far apart in the redwood areas of the CA & Oregon coast. Several years ago I did travel a long trip without a tow car and rented along the way. I found that to be terribly inconvenient and won't try that again but that's just me.

We visited the Redwoods in late Oct and stayed at Redwood River Resorts in Leggett. Nice park and roomy sites. A short drive to the "drive through" redwood tree and LOTS of other sites to see only a short drive away. We will stay there again.

If you want a really nice RV park in the middle of the redwoods, try Benbow RV Resort - Eureka California Hotel - the Benbow Inn in Garberville and Humboldt County redwood country
A little spendy, but well worth it. Easy drive to both the redwood groves to the south and to the north.

On the Yellowstone trip, I chose not to tow our tracker (4 down) because of the height of some of the passes between the Portland area and Yellowstone. We took the northern route out and the southern route back, along with some "off the beaten path" options along the way. Most of our need for a dinghy would be in Yellowstone, so I decided to place less stress on our RV, but still wanted the greatest flexibility for travel in the park. Worked well with one gotcha - we left a nice camera on the rental car and it was not found even with a reward.

The trip to the Redwoods is a much gentler one in terms of elevation as well as less than half the distance. This makes the dinghy much more practical to take along and the side trips along the way (Oregon dunes with the 4WD, Rogue river on the way home, etc.) of greater appeal.
