Cell phone between Florida and Canada

Going to Florida for a couple of months this winter. What is the best way to keep in touch with family in Canada?

I would be more concerned with what cell phone coverage is in the area of Canada you’re trying to call. If you identify the area of flo you’re going to, then folks can make a recommendation. We live in central Florida and gave no issues with att.

I live on the East coast of central FL. Cell coverage here is good. Or at least I never hear folks complain.

I'm not sure it's the "...best way..." but email works pretty good or Facebook.

We travel from Ontario to Florida each winter and have used several different phone companies and plans over the years.
Last year we tried Mint Mobile and they were by far superior, less expensive and the service was uninterrupted.
The only issue is that they will not send a SIM card to Canada.
We had it mailed to a relative in Florida who forwarded it to us.
We will be returning to Mint Mobile again for 2023.

Just to add, we travelled through Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Indianna and Wisconsin and our cellular service and data was excellent through every State.

Depending on where in Florida, if you don't have confirmed reservations, you might just stay home or modify your plans.

In March, 2022, I started trying to book 7-10 days at a campground anywhere in the Fort Myers/North Fort Myers/Fort Myers Beach vicinity, ended up in LaBelle, FL about 45-60 minutes east of Fort Myers.

Cellular service along the West populated corridor (I 75) was being rebuilt/upgraded to 5G service last winter and expected to continue all this year. Hurricane Ian has of course affected that upgrade, but to what extent, who knows?
The existing LTE service will remain, but it becomes severely overloaded during tourist season, resulting in slow service and infrequent service delays. 3G is already dead.
Point is, choose your phone and plan carefully.

While we hate Verizon, it worked better for us in Canada than in the US. We had coverage all the way up into Prince Albert, including extremely remote areas of Canada. It works ok in the US too, but we've found ourselves many times in remote (and not so remote) areas of the US with squat.

The easiest way is to use a Canadian carrier with a US travel plan. You can't get US cell companies to give you anything but a prepaid service unless you have a US social Security no. You need to get it done in person or get a SIM card while you are in the US. We used the ATT prepaid service for many years and works well. One disadvantage is that you get a US tel number so family calling you have to pay long distance. If you get your Canadian carrier to add on a US travel plan you keep your same tel number and no long distance charges. This year we have the TELUS plan for $80CAN/month with unlimited call and text and 100GiG of data. Telus use ATT towers so service is good. Bell and Rogers have similar plans and use ATT also. As long as you are not in a remote area of FL service is not an issue. If you are in a remote area a Cell Booster is useful.
