Hi!

Traffic can be heavy especially at the I26/526 intersection - a lot of trucks to and from the port. Remember this is a peninsula with few ways on or off. Campgrounds might be the Oak Plantation off US 17 South ( Oak Plantation Campground: Charleston ) or the KOA in Mount Pleasant - US 17 North ( Mount Pleasant, South Carolina Camping Vacation ) but either will have traffic issues at times. The very best CG in the area is the one at James Island County Park ( Charleston County Parks and Recreation - Campground & Cottages ) - just a little difficult getting to for some but well worth it and they have a shuttle to take you downtown so no need to fight for parking.

Anyhow, hope this helps and that you enjoy your visit!!

Take care,

Buck

James Island County Park has a very nice campground.
Make reservations first.

One more thing - you might want to look watch the SCDOT traffic cameras to get a hint as to the level of traffic we consider "heavy" you might think otherwise

James County Park is excellent. If you plan ahead and study your city map a few miles in congestion before getting on freeway or expressway. I had no problem with 43' and Jeep toad.

I just left james island county park campground and it was a very clean well done cg. Highly recommended. One of the best cg around anywhere.

The only bad thing is the sand from the pads -- so use a mat and wipe feet before entering camper. and also a reminder to use ant spray as a barrier in any cg around the southern area.
Don't do what I did and stand near a red ant hill either lol -- ouch

Conde Nast Publications has rated Charlestown as the 2nd best City in the country behind San Francisco and ahead of Santa Fe and NYC.

The "Jewel" of the South!

You just have to come and vist Charleston!
