Try and get tickets for the Friday nite Parade at the Marine Barracks. http://www.barracks.marines.mil/Parades/Evening-Parade/ It was the highlight of our visit to DC.

A one hour and fifteen minute performance of music and precision marching, the Evening Parade features "The President's Own" United States Marine Band, "The Commandant's Own" The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, the Marine Corps Color Guard, the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon, Ceremonial Marchers, and Cpl. Chesty XIV, the official mascot of Marine Barracks Washington.

The ceremony starts at 8:45 p.m., beginning with a concert by the United States Marine Band. The Evening Parade, held every Friday evening during the summer, has become a universal symbol of the professionalism, discipline, and Esprit de Corps of the United States Marines.

Evening of the Parade Information
Guests with reservations are admitted beginning at 7:00 p.m. and should arrive no later than 7:45 p.m. Guests with reservations that arrive after 8:00 p.m. are not guaranteed their reserved seating. There is no charge for admission. At the time the reservation is confirmed, a numbered admission gate is assigned to which guests should report on the evening of the parade. At 8:00 p.m., guests without reservations who are waiting in the General Admission line outside the Main Gate of the Barracks are offered the unclaimed seats.

Awesome vacation - my kids loved it.. and so did we !!

Couple suggestions -

1 - Watch the times on trains, especially the last one going back to the campground.
2 - Make sure your "walking" shoe's are plenty broken-in..
3 - We enjoyed going to DC Cupcakes (reality show on TLC Network - Kids idea)
4 - Very much enjoyed the Kennedy Center tour - should be set up by your Representative
5 - Take the time to go to Mt Vernon - Expect to spend the entire day there
6 - Go to Trump Hotel - in the back/side - there is an entrance to the go up to the Post Office tower - one of the best views of DC (along with the Kennedy Center roof)
7 - If you have no young children with you - Holocaust Museum is a MUST
8 - Make sure when/if you do the Capital to ask for gallery tickets right away.. we didn't and missed out - big bummer
9 - Ford Theater - make sure you get your tickets early (maybe even on line)
10 - A "fun" time for us was checking out all the food trucks around the Mall
11- Did I mention to have your walking shoes broken-in ?

On the tickets to the major museums and attractions, sometimes you can get tickets in advance for a dollar.. tickets are usually free, but worth spending the dollar if you can get the time and date you want to go.. check it out on-line at those attractions..

Their website states that the only sites that can be reserved in advance are the premium back in and the premium pull through. All other sites are determined at time of check in.

We stayed here last August. Nice park and easy to get to the city. We drove down to the public transportation place, really easy to get to. I think it's $5 to park all day or the campground has a bus that will take you there. We also went on a night bus cruise that leaves from the campground and visits several of the monuments. Lots to see.

Cherry Hill has a daily session taught by a lady that has been there for years. She explains the best ways to see the sights, best tours, and can answer any questions. The nite tour of the monuments is well worth it.

I'll second driving to the Metro station instaed of taking bus. $5 to park all day and faster than the bus.

Some questions for you.

Any thoughts on driving to the Greenbelt Metro station instead of the College Park station? Less busy, etc?

Any issues with getting parking spaces at either station?

What do you consider the best time to ride the Metro to DC from the RV park?

We're staying there for 2 weeks late May.

Last time to DC was 1990 and riding the Metro.

We stayed outside of Arlington Va. in a hotel then.

Cherry Hill provides a daily class/session where you can ask all your questions. The women doing it has been there for years and knows all the ins and outs.

Stayed at Cherry Hill Park back in 2015. DW and I absolutely loved it there! Will definitely be going back to visit and stay much longer. Clean, well kept and people working there are so helpful.
Transit systems running from there to DC are really convenient.

I never had to wait more than twenty minutes for the bus when arriving back on metro. Guess I’m not in a hurry. Liked not having to fool with the car.

All good info here. We stayed there last year for 2 weeks, not enough time
