Chicago Area

Where would suggest we look for a site. Motorhome 30í and a toad. We want to go downtown a couple of days so being near or next to the metro might make it easier? Will need 30 amp electrical and water.

Thanks,

Craig

Are you by happen military/reserve/retiree?

If so try the RV campground at Great Lakes. It's North of Chicago, there is a Rail Depot right outside the main gate.

There is nothing close to Chicago. McCormick Place in Chicago allows boondocking. I would suggest a Cook Co. Forest Preserve campground in Palatine, IL, a northwest suburb, called Camp Rhineburg. It has almost full hookups. By almost I mean there is a water spigot available to fill your tanks from without moving the RV, but you can't stay connected to it. Each site has electric and sewer.

If you want to experience downtown Chicago, we boondocked at the convention center McCormick Place. Security patrols this parking area and once inside, there is security too. And there is a bus stop that can take you directly up Michigan Ave. So convenient to downtown

Iíll second Camp Reinberg in Palatine. Itís located in the middle of a forest preserve (Deer Grove) which has excellent trails. There is a train station in Palatine where you can catch a Metra train that will take you down to the city. From there you can take busses to wherever you want to go. Youíll want to get the Ventra app on your phone.
I would avoid driving to Chicago. Parking can be hard to find, and is expensive. Be sure to look very carefully at the parking signs before leaving your car. If you park illegally and are towed, youíll have to pay the parking ticket, towing fee as well as a fee for the impound lot.
In addition you have to be aware of speed cameras and red light cameras. Chicago is extremely good at separating people from their money.

How does one drive downtown when many roads are BLVDís with no trucks allowed? And if youíre in a class A, or have truck plates, youíre a truck... plenty of cops there to pull you over and ďeducate you.Ē

I canít even imagine intentionally taking an RV anywhere near downtown Chicago...

Many large motorhomes park there. No problem. Class A's are RVs; not trucks. The above link has pictures and directions how to get there.

I lived on lake shore drive for 8-10 years... if you have truck plates, you’re a truck. Maybe it’s just lake shore drive?

They don’t even allow pick up trucks on BLVD’s...

https://www.chicagotribune.com/autos...121-story.html

Chicago considers a pickup with B plates a truck.

I can only assume a 44,000 pound class A, which will have truck plates, is also a “truck.”

I saw RV’s pulled over all the time...

But if you think you’re right, you’ll get plenty of chance to explain it in court...

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/...172-story.html

And if it is allowed... make sure you have some proof to show the friendly officer...

Keep in mind the the OP needs/wants electric and water, so the Marshaling Yard isnít an option.

Folks did a review of Marshalling Yard - McCormick Place in June 2021. Google it and you'll see it mentioned in many, many RV sites as 'the' place to park for visiting downtown Chicago. They even have security.

Last time we visiting Chicago we camped at the KOA West of Chicago. It is a bit of a drive but nice and quiet.
