We have stayed at Dunes National Park in Beverley Shores Indiana. No hook ups but clean facilities, and a dump station. A short walk across the street to south shores train. Takes you to the terminal that is right down town. I know it's a ways away from Chicago, but no traffic hassel. With Golden age card I think it was $7.50 a day, and seniors pay $5.00 one way on the train.

We stayed at Windy City, on the South side, a few years ago. It was mid march and my sister was dying was in a hospital on the north side of Chicago. This CG was on the interstate and was realatively easy to get to the hospital on the highways.
The cg was very accomodating.

Thanks for the info.
Will have to decide where to stay. Maybe we will just stay in a hotel.

There is also a campground in Yorkville. Can't remember the name but I stayed there in 2007. Not that far from I-55. Yorkville is on RT-47. Take 126 out of Plainfield to 47, turn right and I think it's the second traffic light down the hill, turn right and I believe there are signs saying how far. It will be a left hand turn and it is a dirt road but I took my DP in there with no problem. If I can find the name I'll let you know.

Windy City closed about a year ago. No close by campgrounds, you will have to go to Joliet, IL or just over border in Indiana on I-94. Dunes may be smart way if you don't mind train schedules, JG

There is a KOA near Marengo, and Chain O'Lakes State Park in Spring Grove. These are both northwest of Chicago.
