Colorado: 145 then 550

Hello fellow campers! I have a month to explore! My travel will consist of leaving Cortez, headed up the 145 through Ames, Telluride area. Taking the 62 through sawpit, then down the 550 through Ouray Silverton, etc. Im looking for free camping and must see sights!

Thank you everyone in advance!

I have a favorite Free boondocking spot half way between Ouray and silverton.

The specific location for my spot south of Ouray CO is

Ghost town of Ironton CO

Lat: 37' 56' 07" N
long: 107' 40' 43" W

look at this camping spot on google earth and you can see where the road to the campsites leaves the highway. (it much easier in and out coming from and going to Ouray)

That spot is out in the open. 300 feet in any direction that are places to camp nearer trees and a stream. It can get down to around 40F in July during the night.

There is a great deal to see in ouray and silverton.
You can rent a jeep and see the sights up in the mountains. You might see elk anywhere and around silverton moose.

The first 4 times I camped there the lock did NOT work on my RV door.
I would leave almost every day at 7 AM and come back 12 hours later. nobody ever messed with it.

When we were there last fall we rode the durango to silverton narrow gauge train. Highly recommended it.

Google Maps has trouble with the coordinates as expressed above. Copy and paste the following into the search bar and it will work.

37° 56' 07" N 107° 40' 43" W

Is that huge triangular area at the "mineral creek staging area" a pile of mine waste that was graded flat and smooth and rocked around the sides to prevent erosion? Rather odd looking.

No that is on the other side of the river. You can't get a camper/RV over there on that reclaimed area.
I just run county rd 20D south till it turns west and you are suddenly in the better spots.

When I am in my spot I am 100 feet from the highway incline. There isn't as much traffic as you might think.
July 1st thru july 5 i'd say there is 30-40 campers and rvs in that area.
