X2 on Diamond Lake. Large NF campground (Broken Arrow) at south end of lake. 13 miles to Crater Lake from there. You can then continue on Hwy 97 to Hwy 58. Take Hwy 58 to I5 at Eugene.

Menifee . . . Yuck! (Just joking. My daughter lives there. My wife & I both thought at the high school. We retired out of Temecula. Building a place in Murrieta.). First off, pictures will not do Crater Lake justice. Year ago last September, we were on our way to Crater Lake RV in Prospect. We're in a 37' Class A towing a Honda. You're bigger. We like the absolute best RV resorts. This park looked the best for us. Unfortunately forest fires made us cancel. Instead we spent a week at Seven Feathers in Canyonville. Nothing in California compares to this park. We didn't, but others have used it to access Crater Lake. You mention Sacramento. If overnighting, Expo is your best bet. Here's what we do usually. (Family in Redding & lots of time now that we're retired.). From Temecula, we go over Tehachapi. First night in Bakersfield, which has good parks. We prefer 99. Cut over to 5 at 120 (nice Bass Pro Shops) and stay at Flag City RV. Great pull-thrus and Passport America. Then to Redding. Three excellent parks in the area. Then to Seven Feathers. Or Crater Lake. Last time we were at Crater, we took the boat ride. Awesome. Don't think you'll run out of things to do in the area.

You could stay in Shady Cove RV park right on the Rogue River. Nice RV Park and reasonable. It's about an hour and a half to Crater Lake from there but your still close to I5, 15 minutes from Medford and 45 minutes from Grants Pass. We stay there every summer from June 6 to July 6. Lots of things to explore in that area.

We stayed at Diamond Lake and drove to the park.
For us, Crater Lake was way cool, but 2 days was plenty.
Diamond lake was great for a home base, and even if we didn't go to crater lake, I would go back to Diamond lake in a heartbeat.

I thought I'd post a pic of Toketee Falls I mentioned earlier that is located along hwy 138 to Roseburg and I-5, if you should decide to go that way.

. For me what sets it aside from many other falls is the columnar basalt it flows over. It is a .4 mile hike from the parking area. If you should decide to stay in one of the FS campgrounds near Union Creek there is also the Rogue Rive Gorge nearby that can be visited in a very short period of time, say 30-45 minutes.

Whatever you decide to do, enjoy your stay in the area.

I stayed in nearby Chiloquin OR in 2014 at Walt’s RV Camp, 38400 U.S. 97, Chiloquin, OR 97624 (541)783-2537. Walt’s is an older park with lots of trees and room between campsites; it’s very nice and reasonably priced. If memory serves me correctly they only have 20amp service, however it never got hot enough while I was there (the month of July) to need AC. Nearby attractions are the Collier Logging Museum, Train Mountain (google it, it’s an amazing place!) and a casino (a good place to buy gasoline even if you don’t gamble). Chiloquin’s a very small town but they do have two small grocery stores, a hardware store, and a library. Crater Lake’s about 35 miles away.

BTW I also visited Port Angeles for nearly three months and liked the town and area so much I almost stayed, but then thought about the dreary winter weather and SAD and decided to head back to Arizona for the winter.
