Looking for some input from those snowbirds already in the RGV for this winter. How's the population this year? Light, normal, packed like sardines? We know the weather has been wet but tolerable in south Louisiana so far this winter. We're starting to look at our trip along the Texas gulf coast in February/March to check out the RGV. Not planning to stay in any one place for a longer period of time than about a week or two this year, again just checking things out. Thanks for the input!

I will be there next week so I will let you know when I get there. This will be my first time, going to bounce around till we find the best place for us.

This is our first trip to the RGV, we had heard stories about crowds, and bumper to bumper traffic. We've been here 7 days and don't see it. We are in a beautiful resort, and I would say it's 80% occupied, lots of empty spots. We came in 12/31, I ask about traffic and volume, they expected to be real busy 1/1 and 1/2.... Didn't see it. We are located in Mercedes, but have been up and down I-2 a few times from McAllen to Mercedes, again, seems light to me.

If you don't mind me asking what park are you in? We are looking for a nice place when we get there.

Just a guess, but with the CDN dollar sitting at $.070, there are likely a few less folks from the Great White North this winter.
On the flip side the Ski Areas in Western Canda are having record snow fall and record crowds to go along with the snow.

A bit further north of the RGV, I can report that the crowds at RV parks in Corpus Christi/Port Aransas seem a bit lighter than last year. Maybe 10% fewer.

Thanks for the info! We are looking now at the Corpus area...recommendations on parks? Only wanting to stay for a week or two...so really don't want to be bothered paying electric if avoidable. There is such a huge amount of parks, even with the review sites its to discern good from bad. Don't need a lot of amenities like activities, pools, etc....but would like a park with some elbow room between spaces and fairly level sites. With the rain this winter, maybe gravel or concrete would be best bet this year. Going to check out this park DGB recommends!

We stay at Pioneer RV Resort in Port Aransas. Sites and roads are concrete and there's a boardwalk to the beach. Sites aren't large, but that's typical for places at the beach and other similar destinations.

Thanks DGBPokes for the referral.....Checked out Llano Grande and have booked it. It's a lot newer and nicer looking than the places in Mission we thought about staying at. We are leaving tomorrow and will get there Wednesday.

My parents have been going down to the Mission / McAllen area off and on many times over the last 20 years. Years ago, even at the "cheaper" parks, one would have to put down a deposit when they left, to save a spot for the next winter. I think that was up until fuel prices spiked in 07'. After that they noticed less Winter Texans heading south and less need to reserve a year ahead. And with the exchange rate far less RVers from Canada are traveling down.

I think some of the problem might be with the aging population down there. RVers now want an active lifestyle such as hiking and pickleball and there's not much down there compared to Arizona for hiking and pickleball and Florida for pickleball but not hiking. Every generation will be different as to the 'wants'.
