If you're headed to Lone pine, stay at Boulder Creek.
Really nice park with amazing scenery.

Make sure you visit the Alabama hiils and the Mt Whitney portal road.

We stayed in Lone Pine for 5 days last April and had a ball.

+1 on Boulder Creek.

The portal road is closed right now from rock slides. Hopefully it reopens soon.

Going through Manzanar is worth the time too.

Wow! I had no idea that place was close to Lone Pine. Thanks.

Yup...

From Boulder Creek RV Park to Manzanar is maybe 15 minutes at the speed limit.

After DVNP, we are going to check out the Lone Pine area.
Be sure and take a drive to the Arizona Hills just west of Lone Pine. It will look very familiar...

There's nice boondocking or dry camping in the Lone Pine area.

Everything went as planned. We stayed the first night at Sunset then scouted an excellentl site at Mesquite Springs. We were literally backed up to a bluff over a big wash. From there we drove through Titus Canyon, visited The Crater. We also did a day trip (long) to Ash Meadows Wildlife Refuge and Dante's View.

I have to say, everything is long distance in this park and you can't possibly see everything in less than a week. I also have to say that the exit to the west on 190 through Panamint Springs and on to Lone Pine is my most challenging drive yet. 9% grades and very tight switchbacks. The MH was leaning badly due to the elevated roadway in the curves. It was a white-knuckle ride for both of us.

It was a great trip.

We came down that hill with Georgetown and toad. It was so bad that we disconnected the toad half way down. Scariest stretch of road I can remember in many years of travel.

Glad to hear it's not just me. I think going up was better than coming down. I told DW there's no way we were going back down.

We just did that hairy stretch a couple weeks ago. Harrowing, mostly because we nearly overheated. You go up, then down that long grade, then back up and back down. I wasn't expecting to go across that valley to Panamint, then climb & descend again. We did get buzzed by a fighter jet on our way across to Panamint, which was awesome.

Getting to Lone Pine and the Alabama Hills were well worth it, though. Can't wait to get back there and see more of 395 when it's warmer.

I bet we were there around the same time (4/8 - 4/13). We stayed at Boulder Creek a couple nights to do some laundry, then stayed at Tuttle Creek CG the rest of the time. It was excellent, but would have been better if the roads into the mountains were open.
