Death Valley cancellation

Just received notice that my January 30-February 2 campsite has been canceled due to Covid and we should expect a refund in the near future. Second time this year - 1st was for a March trip and now this one. I guess Death Valley isn't meant to be.

You can still drive through and there are a lot of boondocking opportunities on either side of the park. Guess it depends on what you want to see and how far you are coming to see it.

I found this interesting

My son is boondocking in the area now. I’d be there too but the dreaded DEF malf has me on the bench waiting for an apt with Freightliner in Sac. Lots of good options though including an interesting Harvest Host spot between Death Valley and a Vegas, and of course private parks.

My strategy is to do several days of boondocking, then hit a private rv park to service tanks etc. As soon as I get my def system squared away, I’m heading back that way. When I do I’ll post any good places I find. I don’t really like formal campgrounds anyway, and these days when they are open they are completely packed which is not all that great either.

I’m favoring boondocking between Bakersfield and Vegas and the surrounding areas right now because I want to be within 100 miles or so of a Freightliner shop until my confidence in my SCR/DEF system is restored. So expect reports from South Eastern Ca, Southern Nevada and Western Az.

Anybody have any current info on Scotty's Castle reopening? Yeah, I know things are in a state of flux with Covid, but when we were there 3 years ago the Castle had been closed for 2 years and they were predicting at least 2 more years. Evidently they have one guy working an hour a week with a teaspoon. My great-grandkids could have done the job faster with their beach pail and shovel. Latest info on the web site is not until 2022. But that's the Government web site. Let's see, flood in 2015 ... 2022 opening? I think they rebuilt the World Trade Center quicker. These guys are are unbelievable.

Virtually unlimited boondocking anywhere in the park! I think you have to be 100' from a paved road. It's the ONLY nat park like this!

I don't know who you'd think would have a better opening date than the NPS. Have you read about all the damage? Roads, bridge, walls, etc. Granted it's taking long but this is a massive project and we all know what funding is like.

According to the park's website, backcountry camping is closed along with campgrounds.

Right, like you could transmit COVID while camping miles from anyone. Insane!

Bummer, we boondocked there only a month ago! How much more social distancing can you get? Didn't go into the store but did touch the gas pump handle. Sounds more like more mandated paid time off.

Well the other thing about this is that there is virtually no enforcement going on that I can see. Many folks camping in “No overnight parking” areas, way over crowded camp sites in state parks when they were open, it seems to be a free for all, so I wouldn’t give it a second thought - I’d just go. If my coach were running.....

I am planning to resurrect the Christmas Day trip to the desert in Feb when I get my coach emissions system sorted....hopefully And this will definitely include that Harvest Host site

Go spend some money at Panamint Springs, they are about to lose the place.

I have stayed at Panamint Springs twice in the past (in the motel). It is a good jumping off place to the NW part of DVNP. We were there with about 30 other people who mostly stayed in the campground. It is not much to speak of. The next time I go to DVNP, I am going to stay at Stove Pipe or Furnace Creek. We have not driven the area up from Baker. We came in through Trona (I would not go that way with my RV).

In Anza, we have stayed at Borrego Palm Canyon in the dry camping over by the mountains, site 117 I think (highly recommended). We have also stayed in Ocotillo Wells at the "Leapin Lizard RV Resort". We were happy there and would go back. Everything was clean, the people were nice, and there was some WIFI. I can't remember of there was cell coverage.

I think the way the stay at home order is written, full timers and essential workers are exempt from the camping closures. An exception would be the NPs which I believe have decided to close on there own. I agree about the lack of enforcement. In fact, I called a few hotels for accommodations over the holidays, they basically said "we have no way to verify if you are an essential worker so we take your word for it".

Yes, boondocking is good social distancing usually. But it should seem fairly obvious that when making STATE WIDE or NPS-wide restrictions not every possible situation or location can or should be expected to be taken into consideration.

And a great many boondocking and NFS campgrounds still have personnel working the areas and are exposed to thousands of folks of unknown status coming from states all over the US.

Everybody is better off when everybody is patient, considerate of others and understanding of the problems and risks at every level.
