Desoto State Park - Fort Payne, AL
Just got here this evening. Very nice little park at the top of Lookout Mtn. It's only 95 sites, but they're well spaced, have 50 amp service, water, sewer, and cable (yes, in a state park). The sites are level, large, and have crushed gravel pads in the back-in sites. Haven't looked at the pull thru's yet.
The facilities are fantastic. The bath houses are fairly new, VERY clean, and have washers/dryers.
I'll get some better pics of the park tomorrow when I get a chance to walk around.....
The pups "ruff'n it" on the ride up....
Crystal clear view up on the mountain....
My loungin' buddy....
Your work week is rendered invalid....

It's a small park, but they keep it VERY well maintained. Had a chance to walk most of the campground area and it's nice. Very quiet, very well spaced. The pull thru sites are paved and the sites in the upper loop that have any sort of incline have a paved driveway and crushed gravel pads. Pretty much the entire place is semi-shaded hardwoods.....definitely planning on coming back in the fall.

Great pictures. We will be heading there at the end of the month. Do they have firepits or did you build what you used? Also can I bring wood from home?

Hi All,
This park is about 32 miles from where I live.It is definitely a great place. They have fire rings for campfires and you can bring your own wood. They also have an outside theater where they have entertainment in summer also a store at entrance. Didn't mean to high jack the post just thought you would like to know this place.Be Safe .

Alabama has some of the best state parks. We lived in Alabama and visited 6 or 7 of them

Great little walk through a few of the trails that wind through the park. Lots of water falls, crystal clear water, tons of scenic spots. Too bad the phone was about the die so I couldn't get any pics. We'll definitely have to do that again.
Desoto State Park really is a gorgeous place to get away from folks.

Each site has a fire ring. It's just a rock ring, not one of those cemented into the ground cast iron ones you find at a lot of places. You can bring your own wood, I had the whole front half of the bed loaded up with cut and split wood that I had from down trees at the house.

Nice thing here too is they don't assign you a specific site. You get a card, find a spot you like, clip it on the pole and they simply drive by daily and see who's where. There are several of the pull through's that are nice, the camp host stays at the first one. We like the back in sites and there are no shortage of nice, large ones.

Took a ride around the park to check out some of the other areas. The restuarant at the lodge looks decent. If the weather turns crappy tomorrow we may check it out for lunch. The check in for the cabins and chalets is located there also along with a small gift store. The gift shop at the campground store is actually much nicer.
Here is one of the chalets, looking up from the road. This road comes out from the lodge and dead ends, it has nothing but the cabins and chalets on it and is not a "public" thru-road.
This picture is zoomed in a bit, it's actually about 75 yards off the road. I was in the truck and was trying to keep the mirror and door out of the pic.
