Cherokee, NC

We often trip up to Cherokee to visit our money at Harrah’s Resort Hotel & Casino. Sometimes we stay in a 2 day comped room at the hotel. When staying a little longer for side trips up into the Great Smokey Mountain areas and beyond, we stay at the Flaming Arrow RV Park. It’s about 1 ½ mile from the hotel valet parking.

The Flaming Arrow has spacious grounds with spectacular views of the mountains. In the pictures we’re in a FHU site with CATV. It was an easy back-in.

New Castle, IN

Walnut Ridge is a beautiful well manicured CG out in the IN countryside. The owners live across the street from the CG entrance. The CG does not have provisions for dumping sewer or gray water at your site. We stayed a week and I had to use our blue boy one time. There is a beautiful country golf course a few miles away and great family restaurants in New Castle.

Our site was a pull thru with W&E (50A) and a concrete slab. We had clear skies for our dish antenna.

Wapwallopen, PA.

Sometimes it's a great adventure just hunting for and finding a campground when it's more than just a few miles off your major route. And that's just what happened when we went hunting for Moyer’s Grove CG at Wapwallopen, PA. It was down narrow roads and well secluded in the PA countryside. Our site was a FHU under acorn trees that were dropping their acorns all night. Had the wind been blowing we would not have got much sleep. Not many RV patrons at this CG. It’s occupied mostly by homesteaders and seasonal users. It was clean and well kept but not very friendly. The office store was well stocked.

For those that like to fish, there is a well stocked stream winding through the CG property. The CG office sells bait.

Between the CG and the interstate we found a very friendly country store with reasonable fuel prices, for all grades, including diesel #2.

It was a rewarding adventure to coming this far off a major highway to find a campground. The PA countryside was clear with warm skies. And, now we can say we’ve been to another place in PA with a unique name.

Ganado, TX

After spending a few weeks at the campground aboard the Naval Air Station at Corpus Christi, TX we made our departure on a Saturday morning. Our plan was to travel a couple hundred miles and spend the night short of Huston. We were traveling on US-59 when we found The Shady Oaks RV Resort in Ganado, TX.

They do, in fact, have nice large oak trees with long level FHU pull-thru sites and CATV. It was just what we were looking for. From there we planned on transiting Houston before noon on Sunday morning. After that we would make another stop in LA before getting to our next long stop at the Naval Construction Base RV Park at Gulfport, MS.

Here are a few pictures taken at Shady Oaks and out transit thru Huston on US-59. We followed it to I-10 east. As you can see by the amount of traffic on the highways our plan on going thru Houston before noon on a Sunday was a good decision.

NOTE: I think Shady Oaks is going to become a KOA CG as the web connection is being rewritten.

Statesboro, GA

A couple of years ago we got tired of taking the interstates all the way to Florida. Our little senior retirement community in Taylors, SC is close to US-25. So we have started taking that highway down to Statesboro, GA and spending the night.

The Parkwood RV Park is situated right on US-25 and US-301. It’s been very convenient for us and has all the amenities we like and are accustomed to using. The sites are nice and large, easy to get into, level sites. Our site was a FHU service with 50 amp and free CATV & WI-FI. There are plenty of places to eat very close by and big rig friendly service stations, all with diesel & gas pumps.

When we leave there we take US-301 south and connect up with US-1 which takes us right into Jacksonville. All of the rural roads are in excellent condition with many places to pull-off if needed. Most of the speed limits are 55 - 65 MPH with light traffic flow on week days. We get our best fuel economy at 55 - 62 MPH so that helps a little on the fuel budget.

Here are a few pictures of our parking site when last there and a glimpse of the park roads. The web site below is active.

Iola, KS

If you’ve read some of my traveling posts you know we hardly ever make reservations when traveling from place to place. During our short stop in Iola we were heading for Branson, MO where we did have reservations.

Following US-54 east and just before entering Iola we spotted the Iola RV Park just of the highway. What a great little park. All FHU 50 amps pull thru sites with a nice country store and friendly people. Pulled in, disconnected, and found a good signal for the dish. We had time to spare and spent a couple of days exploring the small KS town of Iola. Went to some yard sales, ate in a downtown dinner and rode the trolley; all at a very reasonable price.

Traveling US-54 in Greenwood County exposes you to some of the largest and most beautiful cattle grazing lands in the country.

Northland RV Park – WI

Here we were meandering along on US-2 from the MI-UP across the northland all the way to Minot, ND before heading south. It’s a great late spring time/early summertime adventure. In this post we were parked at this smallish RV Park near Superior, WI. It had nice large pull-thru sites with FHU services and a great camp store. It was our base camp for a couple of weeks while we explored the area. On a day trip to Duluth we crossed over a section of Lake Superior. At Duluth, I ventured down to the clear waters of Lake Superior for a look-see. I even skipped some stones.
