Alfred, Maine
Having been born and raised in rural Maine I like to stay at rural campgrounds/RV Parks up in that neck of the woods. Walnut Grove CG is one of the very common family run CGs. Free newspapers daily, a nice heated pool and beano (bingo) in the barn on the weekends for prizes.
http://www.walnutgrovecampground.net/
The only thing that keeps Alfred from being a completely rural town is the county courthouse. There are only 16 counties in Maine. Most have large land areas compared to other states such as NC with its 100 counties.
Walnut Grove CG provides a nice secure and quiet place to park your rig and do some side trips. The largest town around is Sanford. It’s a short drive from the CG and has all the expected stores needed for traveling campers. There is a super Wal-Mart, a couple of bowling alleys (candle pins) and a nice park and recreation area as well. (I went to Sanford Senior High School).
Going east out of Alfred will take you to the well traveled costal tourist attractions. The popular beaches at Wells Beach and Ogunquit. Also in Ogunquit is a modern Play House that does popular off Broadway summer stock shows in the spring and summer.
If you go a little northeast from the CG you will find Old Orchard Beach, the Coney Island of Maine - so to speak. Then there is the popular Kennebunkport where you will find the President Bush retreat (compound) right on the Atlantic Ocean.
A trip to this part of the country wouldn’t be complete without a side trip to Portland with its cobblestone streets and super eateries.
Here is a picture of the courthouse and a few of the CG. One day we got real lucky. In the last picture you can see a tire on the ground. When I took the trash out to the road for pick-up I noticed my right rear inside truck tire looked low on air. As it turned out, it was flat. It had a ¼” bolt right in the sidewall. One of our neighbors gave me a helping hand changing it.

Robinsonville, MS
Hollywood Casino RV Park
Robinsonville is also called Tunica Resorts. In any event, it’s location is south of the majority of casinos in Tunica.
The parking at the Hollywood is tight compared to the sites at Sam’s Town across the Blvd. But, it’s higher and dryer when it rains. It’s also very close to the casino’s rear entrance for RV patrons. And, the golf course borders the north and rear portions of the RV Park. There are seven handicap RV parking sites right behind the RV Park office that are just across the park street to the rear entrance of the casino.
In peak seasons, free van rides are regularly scheduled between Tunica & Robinsonville casinos.
Discount van tours to area attractions have pick-up and return services from the park office. We took the all day tour to Memphis with lunch at a Beale Street location with atmosphere. Another highlight was a pass by the motel where Martin Luther King was assassinated. We had a great tour guide making it well worth the cost.

We made 4-6 destination stops a year - while full timing - at casino resorts, especially those with RV parking. The glitter & entertainment has always attracted us. We have seen a long list of celebrity performers at those stops and taken advantage of all the discounts offered, including golfing and area tours.

Northland RV Park is a very nice and quiet, smallish rural RV park. The park store is well equipped and there is an adult bar/lounge near the pool. We had a nice long, wide, drive-thru site with FHU including 50 AMPS. There are no large trees which makes for easy TV signal finding. The park isn’t very close to anything but you can easily make side trips to Superior, WI or Duluth, MI.
We also took a couple of side trips to Haywood where there is a Wal-Mart Supercenter. We went down on US-53 and came back on WI-27. We found lots of great fishing holes along both of those roads.
We spent 10 days there and then continued our adventures going west on US-2.

Now, this Resort setting is expensive and depending on the time of year, reservations will be required. We found that out on our very first visit there. We ended up in a treed section atop a hill with 30 amps, water and grey water dumping connections. It was our very first experience with grey water connections so we had to purchase the fitting from the CG store.
There are ample black water dumping areas available when leaving the CG.
Sometimes bus loads of tent campers will show-up and the entertainment areas will get lively. Most sections will allow a camper and a tent on the same site.
There are a lot of near-by attractions in the Bozrah area and the two huge casino complexes ( Foxwoods & Mohegan Sun) are within easy commuting distances. Both of those complexes have level RV parking sections set aside for dry camping (no tents).
Here are a few pictures taken during our first stop at the CG. It’s a beautiful place with lots of things to do. Just click on the pictures to enlarge them and the link is active. Just click on it.

Love Odetha, been 10 yrs since our last visit. Best championship mini golf around!
I have one of those gray water only connectors, only used it when visiting CT Campgrounds!

El Paso, TX
During our travels, there are states where we have parked that just don’t get mentioned. That’s because we are a retired military family and get to use military CGs/RV Parks. CA, TX and FL are saturated with them. During the busy months, reservations are recommended. Some don’t take reservations because they are strictly first come first serve. Those are very strict and won’t pencil anyone in. You’re not going to get a site with them until you show-up at the park and there's a vacancy.
Fort Bliss at El Paso, TX is a first come first serve RV park. It’s always full. We have stayed there a half dozen times, mostly in the off seasons. We start calling about two hours before mandatory check-out time. We ask if they expect a vacancy and if so, is anyone waiting at the office parking lot.
Fort Bliss RV Park is very modern and there are no bad sites. The buildings are new and also very modern, with a separate well equipped work-out room. Modern TV lounge with super large TV. A cyber café with free computer use for those that don’ have one or forgot to bring one. Across the street from the park entrance there is a well stocked PX mini mart. The park is off base. Just across the street, adjacent to a large military housing area, there is a 27 hole military golf course.
Fort Bliss is a large base with all the modern PX stores and fully stocked commissary.

My wife grew up in Ely on the Iron Range in the Boundary Waters Area, so we have traveled US-53 and stayed at Northland RV Park 2-3 times. It IS quiet and yet close to Superior/Duluth.

Lakeside Landing RV Park & Marina: A very popular (seasonal) place to stay. There are a half dozen fishing tournaments held on the chain of lakes throughout the year but just one large one. Another very busy time is NASCAR races held at the Talladega raceway just a few miles south.
Black Crappie, our favorite pan fish; they are in those waters and thousands of dollars are spent hunting for them. For us the 8” – 12” size is best for filleting. Their white meat is quite delicious.
When these pictures were taken it was early fall and we were heading to FL for a few months. It was a Monday and the piers were empty. During heavy fishing days few will ever try fishing under those docks. Well, it’s a natural hiding and feeding place for the Black Crappie and I got us a good meal every day I fished under them. A small jig on one pole and a minnow on the other is all I needed.
There are lots of parking sites at this RV Park, numerous pull-through sites with FHUs. The link below has a lot of information for those interested.
The park store has everything one would need for parking on a fishing lake including a wide selection of live baits.

Amarillo, TX
One time while heading east on I-40 we were following a huge weather front. By the time we got to TX it was just 40 miles out in front of us. It was causing flash floods, leaving them in its wake as it headed east.
We were hardly ever in a hurry and had zero reservations planned. So we decided to find a nice RV park and hunker down for a week or two or at least until we find out the Mississippi isn’t over its banks. As we entered Amarillo, TX we decided to stop for fuel. While at the fuel stop we asked about nearby RV parks. The attendant said there was a nice one just a couple miles down the road and got the phone number for us.
We called and asked about vacancies for a week. They offered us a site with FHUs and wooden partitions between sites.
Its name was Fort Amarillo RV Resort. It was conveniently located near shopping and grocery stores and had some nice trinket shops on site.
We spent 10 days there before we got conformation that all highways to TN were open and not flooded.
By the time we got to the Mississippi the water level was still very high but not in a flood status.
