Elkhart, IN area trip - looking for suggestions

We are considering a trip to Indiana this summer to check out the RV Hall of Fame and a factory tour or two. Maybe a stop in Chicago. I am looking for any suggestions on places to camp or things we should see. We have two preteen kids so family things are what were looking for. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Indiana Dunes State Park, camping, hiking and sledding on the sand dunes, swimming. That's all I can recall, visit the website for complete information. It is within the NPS Indiana Dunes national lakeshore It would be about a 2 hr drive into Chicago. It would be a 1 hr drive the the museum. Moving to the East of Northern Indiana would be best for visiting the Amish area for great food, shopping, touring in a horse-drawn buggy, etc.

Hi jpspaz,
There is rust in the water in the area. Be careful where you camp. Shipshewana North or South are good choices. In Elkhart there is the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds. All are rust free. In Shipshewana the entertainment is Amish centered. There are things to do for kids. For the adults there are several Amish type restaurants.
Blue Gate
Das Dutchman Essenhaus
are two of them. Forget your diet, just enjoy the food. Essenhaus has a desert menu of just about every pie ever made.

As mentioned, The RV Hall of Fame allows overnight Dry Camping and the museum is excellent.
We pre-arranged a plant tour of the Forest River facility which was quite interesting.
I would imagine there are others you could also tour.
Not in the immediate area but we have also toured Fleetwood in Decatur IN. and Airsteam in Jackson Centre, Ohio and both are excellent.

I may take a beating for saying this but Elkhart (including the MH HOF) never struck me as a kid-friendly type of place. Not that folks are rude. There just doesn't seem to be much for young folks.

Not knowing you or your family's appreciating of things maybe they will enjoy the Hall of Fame. I found it to be so-so.

I would, however, recommend the Menno-Hof Mennonite - Amish Visitor Center in Shipshewanna. I found it very educational and it gave me a much appreciated (and probably needed) history of the Amish. I'd go there again.

If you google Tripadvisor you may find a few more family/kid-centric things.
