That's what I was wondering too. At present, the Bear lake I know that comes to mind is bordered by both Idaho and Utah. And the state camp ground on the east side, the Idaho side, was totally full the last time we tried for a site. We ended up going to a KOA in the town of Garden city. I don't know about the OP and many of you but, we're finding more and more what we call "Live-ins" in all the campgrounds we've spent time in, all over the U.S. There's a trend happening here. Not only full timers, as in retirees etc. but, even younger families are now ON THE ROAD with kids and all. And they've sold their home and are now full time in RV's.
Sure, maybe its possible to find waaaaay out of the campgrounds that might not have too many attractions or things to do and or see, that are not very occupied. We used to be able to just take off in the RV and drive in almost any direction and still at the end of the day, find many campgrounds with plenty of spaces. But, not any more. If we know we're gonna be near some high occupancy attraction, something like Yellowstone, we make reservations long in advance. But, for the OP to find an empty campground, that's anywhere near nice to be in, I applaud that very much.

Yes. One maybe two. Orientation and initiation. Many are joining for this reason. One I know, stayed at the Salinas Elks last week and had a good time.

I stopped at small state parks, all on lakes, all very pleasant, and all just about deserted, on my current cross country journey to Maine. I drove about 400 miles per day to keep it reasonable and stop before dark, and I didn’t hit a busy park until the Ohio/Pennsylvania border area.

Weekend or weekday stay? We can’t get into any campgrounds in the south central Pennsylvania area on the weekends. Most are booked full from Memorial Day to Labor Day on the weekends. We’re retired so we’re perfectly happy with arriving on Sunday and departing on Friday. So far through April and May the campgrounds have been about 50% full during our stays except for the state parks. Cape Henelopen in Lewes DE was full all last week.

We own a lot at River Vista RV Resort in Dillard, GA (Smoky Mountains area). It is our home base for the summer/fall. The park has about 100 rental sites, plus some of the owners rent their sites when not using them. The park is and has been operating at normal capacity - about 60% full during the week, and 90% on weekends. The only low period is January - March (cold/rainy period). In the fall the week-day occupancy increases to about 90%. We have a month-long trip to New England in September, and have already made our reservations.

I hardly ever stay in RV parks. Mostly use National Forest Campgrounds and dispersed camping.

Places that take reservations are pretty much full through the start of school in late August. So I target campgrounds that do not take reservations or use dispersed camping. Once school starts much more availability especially during the week.

It is going to be interesting to see if the covid bump on camping will clear up in late August. I expect so.

At any campground that is half empty on weekdays and packed on weekends should raise the weekend fees.

We started in S Fl May 1st, went out west, been traveling through south and North TX, AZ, CA, NM,UT, and some stops in between, in OK right now, all chain and private camp sites are pretty full. Some more than others.

Oregon coast Newport Port RV park full to the brim. Many rigs in overflow with no hookups $31 a night. Parks in Oregon getting very full.

We like to stay in unadvertised city and county park campgrounds when we need hookups. Places like Hall County (Grand Island), NE; Seward, AK; Sayre, OK; Sopchoppy, FL; Nyssa, OR; Kerrville, TX; and even Forest City, IA. They are certainly not luxurious and may not have showers, laundries, or paved roads. But they have electricity, water, and sewer/dump, which is all we need for a night or two.

And then there are NM state parks, which are the best state park bargain in the nation. $14/night for W/E sites and $18/night for FHU sites, which includes the daily park pass fee, flush toilets, hot showers, dump, picnic table, fire pit, and usually, a lake, boat ramp, fishing, ranger-led programs, and visitor center.

Finally, there are the incredible Corps of Engineers campgrounds, for which we generally pay $8-$14/night with our lifetime Federal Senior Pass. Paved roads and campsites with hookups on the shore of a beautiful lake. Complete with flush toilets, showers, picnic tables, fire pits, playgrounds, and generally shade trees and well-groomed lawns.

Who needs private RV parks?
