AZ in winter.... check out Green Valley south of Tucson. It's a very active 55+ area with lots and lots to do.

I'm late 40's not 55+ yet. Seems like if you want the low desert winter weather and a decent town to live in, its Tucson area or Scottsdale/Phoenix?

You might come across a sort of reverse age discrimination in a lot of the snowbird areas. Some of the folks that are the ages of our parents & grandparents aren’t very welcoming or social with folks of our generation. Some are, though. It’s an experience that I hadn’t thought about in advance. HTH :-)

To the OP: Libby, Whitefish, & Kalispell MT are great.

I enjoyed the Flathead Valley the few times I have been there. But I noticed last time I was up in Whitefish it felt a lot busier and felt less like the rustic town it was in back about 15 years ago. I have not been to Libby yet.

Lived more than 30 different places as an adult, the longest was 13 years in Richland WA. It is this area we chose to come back to after retiring because of the summer climate and the great sailing.

The last two places we lived and worked were Virginia and China near Hong Kong. We loved those places but the summer humidity was very oppressive.

Our winter bases are the Las Vegas area and Shreveport LA because of family. Biting flying insect drive us west to the desert. Very hot drives north. Snow ans ice drives us south.

There is an infinite number of places. Out MH home allows us to explore some.

You don't mention what type of culture you like.

There are some very pleasant communities in central-north Florida, tending definitely more conservative than otherwise, lacking urban amenities, but relaxed and very affordable. The coasts are heavily touristy and retiree/snowbirdy, but much less so inland. Definitely more native Floridian and not at all Key-Westy.

We have a winter place on a beautiful inland fresh-water marsh surrounded by wilderness, without the no-see-um problem of both nearby coasts, or not much. Breezes most of the time crossing from ocean to gulf and vice versa, and, although arctic air does come down now and then, winters are mostly t-shirt and fishing. As I imagine you remember, spring and fall can be very nice also, giving a lot of flexibility for when to head out. Follow the melting snow north or shrug and hang around for more crabbing with friends, or whatever.

And unless you're evacuating a hurricane with several hundred thousand others, as long as you're north of the Orlando-Tampa area you can get out of Florida and into piedmont Georgia before you hit significant traffic.

Thank you for the info on that area of FL. For winters I would certainly take a look at North/Central FL away from the crowded coasts and well north of Orlando. Any areas you would recommend? I think I heard someone say nice things about a campground around Live Oak FL one time.

One thing FL has over AZ is green, trees, water. AZ has its charms for sure, but that comes with lots of rocks, dirt, dryness, and lots of tans and browns. But of course nice sunsets, views, open spaces and desert flora.
