Florida spring trip

I've never been to Florida or the deep South.

I'm thinking this spring might be a good time to go.....see the keys and everglades, etc. Camping spots might be more available with the snowbird egress.

I've got a 32 ft motorhome with a jeep toad.

I've got two dogs well behaved dogs....will they be a concern?

Any tips or suggestions?

Thanks

Be aware that there are Alligators in Florida and if you are camped near water to keep a close eye on your dogs.

Getting reservations is quite the challenge in Florida especially the keys. Hubby and I have a multi months, long planned trip eventually ending up for a month or two in Florida (as soon as the darn borders open, so might be 2024!!!).

We are avid boondockers, and have found tons of opportunities using Ioverlander, Freecampsites.net Campendium, Water Management Districts, RVParky etc. Sadly no dispersed/boondocking, available in the keys alas so outside of SP's (booked out 11 months in advance every time we look), it's $150-$200+/night private CG's if available. Have stayed at John Pennekamp, Bahia Honda, Long Key many many years ago and they were awesome and fair priced - nowadays it's a nightmare trying to secure anything it appears when I check here and there. Because cancellation fees are so nominal, many folks are booking a lot of time well in advance and then cancelling, but as soon as a cancellation comes up it's gone within a minute to 4 minutes we are finding when checking on the scanning websites.

You should find something throughout most of Florida just be aware the keys are like gold dust to get into unless you have very very deep pockets for private CG's.

We've resigned ourselves to another year (2021) of playing in and around the Rockies in Alberta and BC again this year. Very beautiful but it's the same same if you know what I mean, but we are blessed to have them and our gorgeous lakes and rivers to play in at least. Wish our long 2019 trip across Canada to Newfoundland/labrador we'd postponed till this year, but no one knew we'd be in this predicament back then. Sigh.

Happy and safe travels.

Maybe I should leave the MH on the mainland and take the toad for a day trip through the keys.

I wouldn’t try to find a site past Marathon...east day trip to Key West in the car from there. Our snowbird park in WPB is half full so with a little persistence you should be able to find some sites, if only for a few days at a time.

For what it's worth Fogbelly we thought about doing kind of the same. Leaving RV somewhere safe, North of Key Largo and driving down and staying in a Hotel/Guest House around Marathon or thereabouts for a few days. A day trip for us just isn't enough, as we want to do some snorkelling/diving/kayaking trails etc. It would be our last and final trip to the Keys, so want to make it count.

I'm sure you too would appreciate more than a tiring (if you go all the way to Key West and back) day trip. There's an awful lot to do, see, experience and enjoy.

Just saying

Good luck, my wife and I have about 15 hours in planning and calling parks in the Keys and other areas in Florida. Finally have about half of a 2 month trip planned and booking is hard for the most part. But being aggressive has paid off so far. The Keys appear to book many months first, then a month, then a week and after all that they open it up for less than a week.
It is crazy expensive on the water or off the water.

Fog,

Be aware that dogs are not permitted in State parks in the Keys.

That's not true or not inforced.

We camped on Biaha Honda and John Pennecamp state parks just this winter and dogs were everywhere.

Look at Jolly Roger in Marathon

Jrtp.com

After April 1st all sites are $78. It is halfway down the Keys. Sites are nice. Full hook ups and cable. This will be our 3rd time there, we love the place. After April 1st reservations are pretty easy. We were there previously in April 2016 and park was about a third full. Last October it was about a quarter full. Seems to be good time after all snowbirds leave.

We love Marathon . Only 60 miles to Key West .

We rented 21' Center Console day boat . Ran out to Sombrero Key for a little late morning snorkeling , packed a lunch and headed into the Mangroves for lunch break . Pulled up anchor and circumnavigated the island exploring the waterfront bars and resorts.

Got back to the marina just in time to grab a couple Hurricane's and a couple beach chairs to catch the Green Flash at Sundown.

A perfect ending to a perfect day !

Gotta Luv it !

My bad, they have changed their policy on pets. They were previously not allowed siting something about the flora and fauna.

Thanks.
