Gettysburg 150 year celebration
Planning to go to Gettysburg to attend the 150 year celebrations around the 4th of July this summer. Are there any campgrounds that are within walking distance of most of the action? It is hard to figure when the camping listing says "close" by. I assume the traffic will be terrible.
Thanks

You will have to check out their Gettysburg address. (pardon the pun)

I'm surprised by the lack of replies so far.

We lived about 1.5 hours from there.
The 7/4 events were mobbed. We drove by one time to see how it was. WOOF!
To see the battle re-enactment and get any view at all is like having superbowl tics on the 50 yd line.
We have been there many times and it is grand, when it is NOT 7/4.
If you go, I wish you the patience of a saint, and pockets as deep as the ocean.
Really and no kidding!
There are many re-enactments where you can be up front for a few bucks a carload. One is Cedar Creek in VA in October. They were blasting away 50 feet from us!

BTW, 150 is big.
If you dont have a site booked now, you may be driving from another county.

This is one of my more favorite places but I might well have to rethink about it. Thank you for the insight.

I guess that depends on what you consider walking distance
My guess is that you will have a very difficult time finding an available campground in Gettysburg. I live in York (30 mi. east) and have seen news reports that some Hotels in York are being sold out.

As a former American Civil War re-enactor (96th Penna. Vol. Inf.) I participated in many of the 125th anniversary events. I cannot stress how big a deal this one will be.
Annual Gettysburg Civil War Battle Reenactment
As a participant I had a place to stay - in a tent. The traffic will be absolutely horrendous gridlock. I hate to discourage you, but if you don't have reservations now, I am afraid you'll not get anything remotely in the area.

After much checking around I found a campground that was not yet sold out and made reservations for the whole week. Their prices were reasonable compaired to some others and it is away from the town but on the side where the activities are going to be. (Mountaincreek CG)
I also was able to get entrance and grandstand tickets for all 4 days. So thanks to your input I am all set, just have to drive the 900 miles to get there!
I always count on these forums to get me the info I am looking for and you always come through! THANKS

Mountain Creek is a great campground just outside Pine Grove Furnace State Park.
You'll have a nice, scenic 30 - 45 min. drive to Gettysburg, depending on traffic.

Hi adventurous2,
Artillery Ridge CG is the closest to the battlefield and the Park information center complex. I've stayed there many times and would stay there again.

Was at Artillery Ridge last October. Talking to the owner, he said they have about 200 sites and the wait list for the 150 anniversary was over 200 rv's.

I hope you enjoy your stay. We were there for 8 nights from July 2 to the 9th. We camped at Granet Hill. We would not stay there again. It is not HDA at all. The Traffic is pretty bad but you will enjoy it. If the Weather is like last year Please take and drink lots of water. The Humidity was unreal. We are from Arizona so it was bad for us and they had people passing out. It was in the 90's
