Gettysburg?
I need to make my decision on what campground to stay at real soon. There are several that get good reviews. One concern I have is I have read to stay out of the downtown area with the motorhome. At two of the campgrounds I would have to cross the downtown area to get back to I-81. I have also read to stay off of Hwy. 30. I do not see how I cannot involve Hwy. 30. My choices are below. I have a 41' motorhome plus toad.
Artillery Ridge - this will involve crossing though the downtown area and Hwy. 30
Gettysburg Campground - I would be on Hwy 30 coming in and going out
Gettysburg KOA - this will also involve Hwy 30, plus it is the most expensive and the furthest away from the battlefields

I have been going to Artillery Ridge for many years we take Route 15 to Tanneytown road, this avoids any downtown congestion.

We've stayed at all three - now use Gettysburg Campground for our annual return visits. Robert and his crew will take good care of you - but make reservations early to have the most flexibility for sites / dates. We've driven our 43' through town by staying on the main routes.
BTW: we think the KOA is the prettiest CG with flowers in bloom ...

Hi reubenray,
Been using Artillery Ridge whenever we go. Perfect location. Take the bypass as posted above.

I think that advice is for people who think they are going to drive an rv around to all the battlefields. We stayed at Artillery Ridge while we were there. It was decent, but a bit muddy when we were there in March. We drove the rv through town when we left. Its no big deal. When you have driven on the 401 hwy in Toronto, or through the very narrow streets in Old Quebec City, I guess nothing really bothers you anymore. It didn't seem any different than driving through any other town. We had a toad, and drove around to all the sites our selves. You can get apps on your phone that work off gps, and give you descriptions of each location. You can also hire a guide. They will drive your vehicle for you, and give you history lessons as you go. We enjoyed Gettysburg. The cyclorama was very interesting. Its like 3d from 100 yrs ago. I am Canadian, but I think every American should go to Gettysburg. Lots to be learned there. Enjoy the trip.

At Artillery Ridge can you reserve a particular site? If so what site would you recommend.
I read that some are way out of level and very tight.

I have used both Gettysburg and Granite Hill which are both on the same road, plus we tow a 43' 5th wheel with a class 8 Kenworth tractor and have had no issues getting around anywhere needed getting there and back, yes there is one turn in town that is tight but I know where it is and plan for it and if someone happens to be across the stop line there THEY will move.

Hi reubenray,
All I have ever asked for, and received, is a site with no trees. Wife needs her satellite TV. There are quite a few sites with trees.

and off to the races
We live 45 minutes from Gettysburg and been there many times. It`s a humbling experience to see, hear and read what those men did (on both sides) during that conflict. Everyone should go at least once in there life time. Take the bus guided tour and sit on top of the bus. They give you a complete explanation of events and show you the different battle areas, wow, just can`t imagine doing what they did and I`m a VN combat Vet. In town you can go and tour on foot the building where Lincoln slept and wrote the Gettysburg address. Some of the stuff you see will make you appreciate a little more that morning coffee, while watching TV in a warm house.
We stay at Granite Hill Campground, found this one to be the best for us ( tried them all) Easy in and out to route 116 to Left on Route 30 then on to I 81 north or south. Only one turn in town is a little tight but I make it with a 40' 5th wheel if no one is crowding the line. RT. 30 is NOT a problem in any direction not sure what the other people are talking about.

Amen. Thank you for your service.
Actually I went to Gettysburg yesterday. Not a long drive for me. We're taking our granddaughter and a friend there next week for spring break. Not sure of your time period but the KOA and Gettysburg Campground are not yet open. I went to Artillery. Found out it's just under new management but didn't look like any changes yet. They hold a few spots in the center for year round use so looks like we'll be there. Understand comments about unlevel and gravel. Suspect I'll be blocked up for sure. But good location. They have horseback tours which operate right from the park but they don't start up until later this month.
Can let you know next week.

While there go to Sunset Ice Cream Parlor downtown on Steinwher and get their Peanut Butter Ripple ice cream. best Peanut Butter Ripple in the world.
We took a guided tour of the battlefields on a Segway. Great.

My stop there will be the middle of October and on a weekend. I checked KOA and they are full. Is there something going on at that time?
Looking at the map of downtown Gettysbury and I saw a traffic circle. Is this big enough for a 41' motorhome pulling a toad?

Doesn't look like anything which would explain a booked campground that far out.
