We were to Grand Isle in '04.
Although we have been near New Orleans 5-6 six times since we have not gone back.
Unless things have improved dramatically, (or if you have some good reason to go there), the 200 mile round trip off the beaten path, on a good road through nothing but salt marshes, is a waste of time and fuel.
My 2 cents.

It's more like 50 miles below Houma and route 90 if you'd happen to be in those areas. We drove down there right after the big oil spill just to look around. I don't know that I would specifically recommend that anybody heads down to Grand Isle unless they sometimes look at a map and want to go "there." Would we go back? For sure. And the next time we will take more time to check out everything along the way and then stay down in Grand Isle for a longer time.

If you want to fishing this is one of the best places to go. There are charter boats ranging from 18' to 60' that you can go out to the rigs and marsh to fish. Or you can park at the stat park there and fish in the surf. There is an abundance of seafood there also. It is a fishing village but some go and just lie around on. The beach. It all depends what you are looking for.

We hope to be there the end of March early April to camp and eat fresh seafood. We don't plan of fishing but ya never know, we might try it. Are there many good restaurants around that area? How about seafood markets? And what is the local favorite fish, not shell fish? Our plan is the general New Orleans area, including Grand Isle, Bayou Signette and even St Bernard, before heading over to Mississippi and then work our way home.

Drove out there last january...couple places to eat, but they didn't look like the center of the universe for good seafood. The campground has electric and water, with a sewer dump. Just over the dune from a respectable beach. Did seem like a windy place, but a nice quid place to camp. It certainly is at the end of nowhere with a small town. i seem to remember a small grocery and a couple beer joints. Some folks have condos.

The Walmart at Raceland is a good stop for supplies and good access for fuel, every thing on the island is pricy. Check geauxpass.com for bridge toll info. The no-see-ums can come right thru the screens. It is a place you should visit at least once and decide for yourself if you want to go back. We had the trailer out there 2 weeks before the oil well blew.

Grand Isle, La
We live in BR but travel there once in awhile. There are a lot of seafood markets, fresh off the boat, type. The island is not a big place but there are some mom & pop resturants that serve good food. In you travels be careful when traveling through GOLDEN MEADOW, LA. They love to give out tickets for speeding. What ever the speed limit I suggest that you stick to it or under while traveling through there. We don't usually visit many resturants in that area as we are generally with friend and we get the seafood and cook it at their camp. As for a certain fish I would say that the speckle trout, flounder and redfish are generally very popular. Have fun and enjoy the area as it is quite quaint and likely no duplicateded any where else.
