Great Smoky Mountains NP - Cancel?
Was planning to leave MA today, for reservations at Cades Cove 10/2 - 10/6.
Stops in NY, PA, & VA before arriving. Great Smokey Mountains NP website is encouraging folks to reschedule trips for "their own safety & to reduce traffic in surrounding communities heavily impacted by the storm." When I look at the National Weather Service Map, the current 3 day forecast shows mostly rain for all the locations we would be traveling through. So, my sense is, given existing and forthcoming weather conditions, it's better to continue keeping the folks in those areas in my thoughts and reschedule. Alternative and supporting opinions welcome.

Yup. The areas you mention have a lot on their hands, and tourism is way down the list.

If your plan is to cancel the reservation. Please cancel it so someone else can snag the site. Fall in the Smokey’s is beautiful.

I live in E TN, ~45 miles away from Cades Cove.
Yes, weather here had been bad. Several flood alerts NE of the Smokies. Douglas Lake is rising fast, suppose to rise 20' from levels of a 4 days ago. The two river systems feeding the lake are at record flood states.
But TVA is controlling water release down stream to lower impact. Fortunately the lake levels were low so they don't anticipate any problems.
You do not have to go through the main entrance to get to Cades Cove, you can drive 441 to 321 through Wears Valley. But the GSNP does have some closures.
But it's up to you. I'd call the visitor center to get an opinion.

Thanks for your input jacwjames. Always more helpful to get local knowledge. I did try calling the GSMNP to speak with someone, but the Cades Cove Visitor Center is closed until 11AM, EST, today and the offices, per their message, are only open Mon-Fri. I attempted to call two of campgrounds along our route in VA, but went to messaging which may be indicative, as "kenandterry" commented, that their attention is focused on more important matters.

I think you are missing the point of OP cancelling.

We are going to Sevierville TN October 16 for 10 days. DW will not go through the Gouge on I-40, we always take US 52 to I-77 to I-81 and then pick up I-40. We have been in Pigeon Forge after a lot of rain in the mountains and had to move our camper. I guess a lot of people are without power today, me I have a guarantee that my electric power will not ever go out

This was posted today on another site:
So thankful they knocked on our door to tell us to get out here in Sevierville TN Two Rivers RV Resort. They told us that they were about to let out another 50k gallons water later that morning then in the afternoon. RV park said it will go up at least another 3-4 foot. This RV Park is top notch not only from the park itself, but also, they do take care of the RVers. We are now in Alabama ☺
Some take aways from this.
· Pay attention to national weather not just your location. We were to be in NC but changed to try and get in front of Helene. If needed to change your plans
· Talk with RV park officials, park host and fellow RV’ers to know what plans are in case if weather issues. Follow up often.
· Fill up with gas before you got to your RV park. We do this every time. If need to run generator needs as much of gas as possible.
· Fill freshwater tanks, dump tanks if there is possibility of bad weather
· Run your generator make sure you don’t have issues
· We are lucky and were facing into the wind Friday night and morning. You cannot always have the options so pull in slides.
· Have “GO” bag ready just in case. (meds, money, wallet, keys etc. etc.)
· Get alerts on your phone get a weather station.
· Don’t get upset, pissed off just roll with it. Its all part of the experience
· Have you beer or drink stash stocked up. It was relaxing hanging fellow RVers in the parking lot.
· Help other RVers especially the older folks. I would want the same

Normally the Smoky Mountains are beautiful any time of year, but now they are in a sad state of affairs and tourists would probably just be in the way.

Wind speeds in the area may have shipped those leaves to Arizona. The entire western part of NC has been ravaged by Helene.
I40 was washed out in places.
Stay home or head elsewhere.

I-40 in the area by the TN/NC line has been partially wiped out. Estimated reopening in Sept. 2025. It's so unstable right now that they are using drones to do damage assessment and not risk bringing in manpower/equipment at this point.

From the NCDOT:
"We cannot say this enough: DO NOT TRAVEL IN OR TO WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA.
REMINDER: All roads in Western North Carolina should be considered CLOSED.
I-40 and I-26 are impassable in multiple locations.
Travel in this area for non-emergency purposes is hindering needed emergency response.
For details on the restricted travel area, visit DriveNC.gov."
