I have a friend who lives in Gulf Shores and she says the state park is incredible. It has high ratings. I'm going to stop there if I'm ever able to travel, again.

We stayed there for many years during Spring Break and went back several years ago, but it was not the same park as the hurricane had wiped out so many of the trees. We always loved bicycling and walking through the park. We also enjoyed eating at "Doc's" in Orange Beach....doesn't look like much from the outside, but it was always our favorite restaurant, even better than DeSoto's.

Hurricane Ivan in '04 did a lot of damage to GSP and the state completely rebuilt it. It now has lots of water front lots, full hook ups and several new buildings. I think you will find it to your liking.

Many of the old growth trees were blown down but this is pine tree area and regeneration is pretty fast comparatively.

As for places to eat Doc's and Desota's are great and there are many other restaurants here that offer a plethora of food ranging from the 'traditional Southern taste to Cajun'. Also there are lots of other RV parks if you are unhappy at the State Park.

I was in Gulf Shores in January and February. I went to the state park to consider staying there next year. They didn't have any openings for early 2012! I read their brochure and found their "visitor's policies" to be very interesting and confirmed this policy with the attendants at the park. You cannot have visitors after dark!! They can come before dark but can't leave until the next morning! They claim this restriction is to ensure security of the park but I claim it is a program designed to punish all for that same 10% that cause most of the problems in our country today. Pretty sad...
