Gunsmoke

Just finishing a 3 night stay in Dodge City, KS. It has been surprisingly pleasant. For the end of Oct the weather was great: bright sun, highs in 60's and 70's, lows near freezing. We are at the the new KOA. Concrete pads on the pull throughs and located just south of the old business district, right next to Wright Park and the small but free zoo.

Most of the tourist attractions are based on the cowtown era and many are modeled after the old Gunsmoke TV program. The Boot Hill Museum is a replica of the original Front Street and is very good. A must see if you have kids along. There is also a casino on the western edge of town.

There are some good restaurants with beef being the prime (no pun intended) menu selection. But there are very good mexican restaurants also. In fact, don't judge the food by the outside. We found some of the least likely looking to have the best food (try Miss Kitty's Cafe.)

The museum, the casino, the zoo, the park, and just west of town, the ruts in the prairie from the old Santa Fe trail will make an interesting 2 or 3 day stay.

We spent a few days there when the kids were small. Great fun for them with the shoot outs they do in the summer. I will remember the RV park.

Thanks, T&G Smith

Just a few miles West of Dodge is the small town of Garden City then Holcomb.
Holcomb is the town where the Clutter family were murdered and Truman Capote wrote "In Cold Blood".
Being a former Leo it was interesting to me.
