Heading to the Florida Keys for vacation

We are heading for Key West tomorrow from Lexington , NC. This is the first time since we bought our first motor home in 2008 that are sole purpose of our travels with the motor home was to vacation. All of our trips over the past 6 years have been traveling from one job to another with an occasional side trip thrown in. DW, my sister-in-law, brother, & I will be going for the week. To say we are excited is an understatement.

While in Key West we will be staying at Blue Water Key Camping resort. We plan on taking the trip to the Dry Tortuga NP at Fort Jefferson along with just being tourist in Key West for a few days then head back up to Key Largo for a few days, staying at John Pennekamp SP. I have been to the Keys several times, but the rest of the gang has only been there once or not at all. Hope I can be a good tourist guide.

Your timing could not be better. The rainy weather is leaving the area tomorrow, temps will be in the low 80s. I have lived in south Florida for the last 34 years and absolutely love it. Make sure to take everybody thru the Mel Fisher museum and hold that bar of gold in their hand, and gaze at that huge emerald. The best snorkeling trip is Looe Key. Never been to the fort in Dry Tortugas...you must be taking the float plane. Have a great time in Margaritaville!

We will be down in about a week. Two weeks at Bahia Honda SP then Knight's Key until spring. Can't wait.

Hemingway's house is interesting especially if you are a fan. If you are into the bars, there is one about every fifth door.

The Blue Water Key Resort is one of the best RV sites we have ever seen. The grounds are somewhat compact but the landscaping and ambiance is out of the world. If you go to the Mel Fisher museum you wont see or touch the gold bar. It was stolen a few years ago. Lore says it was an inside job but who knows!! A great hidden local eating spot especially for Sunday brunch is Geiger Key Marina on you guessed it Geiger Key. They serve complementary mimosas.

Agree with rg neumann about Blue Water Key Resort. We reserved a spot for a week in May 2013 and somehow ended up staying 3 weeks! There was just something about waking up every morning, stepping out of the RV and having the ocean right there!Click image for larger version
