Highways 231 and 84 in AL and GA

We are traveling from Michigan to Bainbridge GA late November.
We choose to take the I-65 route to Montgomery AL, then highway 231 to Dothan AL, and highway 84 into Bainbridge. We are unfamiliar with highways 231 and 84. We have a big rig, so are concerned with road lanes (how many) and conditions. We are also seeking info on the safety of this area when stopping for rest. Thanks for your input!

i've traveled I-65/231 to dothan many, many times with our 35 and now 39' motorhomes towing our jeep. 231 is 4-lanes from montgomery thru dothan ending at I-10. 231 is mostly a rural highway but you'll go thru Ozark, Enterprise and Troy. of those three Troy will have the most traffic but it's not all that bad. Dothan is the largest town and worst case might take 30-minutes end-to-end.

i strongly suggest you do this: follow I-65 south to I-85 north towards atlanta. take exit 9 on 85 which should be marked US 271 and TO US 231. turn right at the top of the ramp. US 271 is 4-lanes and will dead end at US 231 about 7 or 8-miles down the road. doing this will save a few miles but lots and lots of time for if you follow I-65 to US 231 you'll be in stop 'n go traffic forever. as they say... been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

can't help you with hwy 84...we always go thru dothan to I-10. sorry.

Both US 231 and US 84 are very good roads. US 84 has very little traffic and mostly rural and it is four lane all the way between Dothan, AL and Bainbridge, GA.

yup. if it's just an overnight there are two parks in ozark we've used. Mr D's is basic, no frills. full hookups and a cLear view of the sky if you have satellite. tbe other is a nice KOA. full hookup, cable, the usual amenities. both are quiet and clean. there are a couple of parks in dothan that don't look like much but we've never stayed at them. if you want a parking lot there are wal marts in troy, ozark and dothan and a flying j in dothan. call ahead and check their policy on ONP.

btw, if you choose to take my advice on routing when you get onto NB I-85 from I-65 don't be fooled at exit 6 for it will be marked US 231. continue to exit 9 to US 271 which will take you to US231 bypassing almost all local traffc on 231.

Deer Run RV Park outside of Troy, AL is a wonderful place to overnight also. Very nice park with all the amenities and easy in and out with RV. Enjoy your trip and be safe!
