I-70 Ks to Denver in December? Crazy? :)

I may be crazy, but I'm planning on going to Denver the weekend before Christmas, Colorado Springs Christmas, then SW Kansas on the way back to Texas New Years.

Anyone have any crystal balls into weather predictions/forecasting/plans?

Obviously, if snow or bad weather is forecast before departure, the trip will have to be cancelled, but weather forecasts are only good for a few days out, this is almost a 2 week trip......kinda nervous....

It could go either way, sunshine and no snow or a blizzard with high winds. Just plan for the worse, watch the weather forecasts, and "go for it"!

Don't forget; once you get far enough west they have hinged steel gates across the interstates that allow closing the roads if conditions warrant. Having a good GPS with traffic condition feature, or detailed maps with state roads, might be a really good idea...

Just be ready to change your plans at any minute, just because the weather is fine for you to get here, it may not be good enough when you try to return home. So if you can make it out here and have some flex on your return date then probably ok. It's not so much the amount of snow that gets the roads closed, it's the wind blowing it across the highways, and they're real quick to close those roads in order to avoid the issue of a bunch of stranded motorists. Salina KS KOA stays open all Winter, Goodland closes, and I'm not sure about Hayes.

Well, I had enough ice/sleet/snow this last week to last me the winter.

That and other factors with folks I was planning to visit are cancelling my Colorado trip. I think I'll re-route to Louisiana.... maybe Alexandria and/or St. Charles....

Or, may just go visit friends in the nearby oasis of Hideaway Lake....

Anyway, Merry Christmas folks!!

Having lived in Denver for 20 years, you do travel by the Weather Channels 5 day forecast, no question about it. If they say it is coming, you either leave or stay, I-70 is where not to be caught.
