We're traveling east from Portland, OR in early to mid August. Our goal is to spend a couple of weeks in the Grand Tetons/Jackson, WY area. A couple of questions: 1) Does anyone have a recommendation for CGs in the Jackson area that are reasonably priced? I've seen several that don't advertise prices and when I called or emailed they were $50-60/night! Yikes! Since we don't have to be right in Jackson, just close enough for car trips to sites in the Tetons, smaller towns/CGs etc that are within sight of the the mountains would be fine. 2) Is it feasible to drive the coach (40'DP + toad) through the West Yellowstone entrance and then through the south entrance to get to the Tetons?

Thanks for you experience and help!

When we were at Jackson we stayed at The Virginian Lodge and RV Resort. Cannot speak about any others in the area. In mid-season I am sure they will all be quite pricey. The Virginian is very convenient.

You will have no problem at all driving from West Yellowstone, through the park, to the South entrance.

Have done that drive in a 36' with a toad, no problem. West Yellowstone is a nice place to stay while touring Yellowstone Nat'l Park then on to Coulter Bay to stay while touring the Tetons. But call at least a few days ahead to be sure you will have a place when you get there. Everything in Jackson, Wyo is extremely high priced and has been since even back in the '50s and '60s - nice place to visit for the day though.

Do you *have* to have hookups? If not, then the campgrounds inside the park (NPS-run campgrounds) are nice and a lot less expensive than the RV parks in and around Jackson, especially if you have the Senior or Access Pass! Even the concessionaire-run campgrounds inside the park are expensive!

If you just have to have hookups, then look at some of the Passport America parks in towns surrounding GTNP.

Colter Bay Campground within Grand Tetons NP is wonderful. You might be told they are full for the days you want but I have found that if you just call and call and call the 800 number, vacancies eventually turn up. This campground is much nicer than the ones in Jackson.

Also in West Yellowstone there is a Grizzly Campground that is great. A very upscale RV park at the boundary of Yellowstone.

I drove our 40' RV through the park and had no problem even though the roads are narrow.

Colter Bay RV Campground has full hook-ups. It is the one within the park.

Coulter Bay has two sections. The full hookup RV park is often full and reservations are recommended. The other section is RV dry-camping and tents only and is usually available, especially if you get there early. There are a couple of other CGs by the lake, but watch for size restrictions.
We just spent a couple of days at the Gros Ventre Campground. Not as popular since it is off the track, and not by the lake. More of a prairie feel, except we had a good view of Grand Teton from our site. Hardly ever full.

Thanks for the recommendations regarding Coulter Bay and Gros Ventre. I wondered about them but wasn't sure about RV sizes, etc. We stayed Grizzly RV a few years back and was impressed - but then we weren't full timing and weren't as concerned for the prices, etc. We'll still probably stay one night to get a full day's view traveling through Yellowstone the next day.
