Just got home from our Colorado vacation

Ok, first thanks for all the ideas and places to stay, we made it to Montrose and back to DFW in one piece. We took 287 to Amarillo and 87 to Raton, from there we took I think 64 off of 25, went through Gardner, then took 50 , Monarch Pass was interesting, had a couple of impatient drivers show me their age or IQ, not sure which one. The road construction on 50 was pretty bad on Saturday, they had it open going both ways, the lanes were very narrow and made it challenging with traffic going both ways, especially with big rigs, I was white knuckling it through all of that but we made it through, I actually like it much better coming back when they had one lane open at a time, I doubt we were delayed more that 15 minutes and it sure was way easier driving. We stayed at Riverbend RV Park in Montrose, what a great place, the folks running it are super nice and helpful, I would have to give it 5 stars. We spent a day at Black Canyon, very nice, did some fishing and had a nice picnic. Another day we did the Ophir trail out of Ouray, it was all good until we met 5 other vehicles halfway down the side with the ledge, it got real western there, we had a log jam, it took about a half hour to get that all worked out, the group we met halfway were very experienced and friendly, from there we went to Telluride, it was really nice, had lunch and a brew and headed back to Montrose, we took the Last Dollar Hwy, it was a good easy drive. Another day we did the Owl Creek Pass, it was a cool ride, pretty country, on our last day we just hung out around Montrose and Ridgeway, did some shopping and what not. We left out for home Thursday, took 50 to Gunnison then decided to take 114, wow, some very beautiful country, that was the windingest road I think I have ever been on, made it to Amarillo about 7:30 last night, we stayed at the Ranch RV Park, took the courtesy shuttle over to the Big Texan for a steak, was there about 40 years ago, it has not changed much, left there about 8:30 this morning and rolled into Southlake about 1:30, was a great trip, thanks again for all the help.

Hi Kampers, That is a nice trip report.

I have lived in Colorado for more than 50 years and I had never heard of the Last Dollar Road! I've looked it up and it sounds like a nice back country drive!

Ya learn something new every day! Thanks.

Did pretty much the same trip but chose not to do Rte 50 as a look at Google Maps showed the road as 2 lane and winding. Did I-25 to Denver and I-70 West bound. I-70 was a terrible road! Very rough! Traffic was a nightmare on the Friday before the 4th of July weekend. Will not do that again. Beautiful country for sure!

I live in Colorado Springs, my daughter lives near Glenwood Springs. The logical way to go to her house is via I25 and I70. I find I70 such an unpleasant drive that I almost always use US24 from Colorado Springs to I70 at Vail whether I am driving the motorhome or a car. That route skips the crazy traffic between Denver and Vail and the atrocious highway conditions on I70.

So what if it is a narrow 2 lane highway. It is the WEST. We got lots of narrow 2 lane highways and they have less traffic, the highway surface is generally pretty good and the scenery is MUCH better than along I70 except for the Glenwood Canyon near Glenwood Springs.

I almost always advise people to avoid I70 between Denver and Vail. The are often more pleasant ways to get wherever you are going.

Last Dollar Road is a great side trip. No real cliffside driving and a lot of Aspen groves with some great views of the Telluride valley from the top. We will be heading over that in a few days along with others around here.
