Late check in?

We will be staying at a Corps of Engineers (COE) campground. In reviewing our reservations I noticed it says check in time is 6 PM. Has anyone run into this before? 6 PM seems really late to check in. Are they really meaning no later than 6 PM?

Probably call the park to find out. There should be a way to contact them and find out first hand what correct.

What's the name of the park? We've never encountered that late of a time.

I agree, call the park. Parks can have different check in times. That's the only way you'll know for sure since you didn't indicate the park name/location in your message where someone who's stayed there can comment.

I stay in quite a few COE campgrounds in Texas and Arkansas. Normally the check out time is 4:00 pm and checking in is 6:00 pm.
In the last four weeks I have been in three COE campgrounds, all with these times. Currently in Denby Point Campground (COE) on Lake Ouachita near Hot Springs, Ar; and these are the times.
Most of the time I call ahead and make sure my site is not occupied and usually arrive around 2:00 pm. I have never, so far, had an issue nor had anyone still in my site upon arrival. However, I have just been lucky; as today (I checked in at 2:00 pm) but I did see several campers leave around 4:00 pm and one left at 6:00 pm.
I do not understand it, but that is the way it is in a whole lot of COE campgrounds. I still think they are the best.
Thanks,

It's Methodist Cove COE at Harlan County Lake in Nebraska. It says checkout is 6 PM & check in is 6 PM. I'm waiting for them to return my call. It seems strange to have check in or checkout be that late.

We were going to stay at a couple other COE campgrounds in Kansas and they both had the same thing. They also discontinued taking reservations after 9/15 so we're going somewhere else where we can reserve.

Thanks,
The COE campgrounds we looked at all had check in at 6 PM.

When I talked with them today they told me if the site was occupied we could stay in the parking lot until it was empty. At first they said to call, but since we arrive on Sunday there is no one in the office. I guess we'll just hope our site is empty when we get there.

There are lots of CGs in Oklahoma that has a 5 or 6pm check-in. I have checked in to the COE parks here at 1-2 pm with no problems.

Well we got to the campground at 1:30 and had to wait until almost 3:30 for our site. The people across from us left at 5:30 and new people arrived shortly afterward. Seems very odd to have such a late checkout & check in. It’s been crazy windy today so it’s not like people can enjoy the lake.

The 9/15 cutoff on the reservations could be because they are no longer in peak season. After 9/15 most schools are in session, and most families have put away the camping gear for the winter. For this reason a lot of parks, CG's and resorts do not require reservations late fall to late spring. It just isn't necessary because they are operating at less than capacity. I know out here on the West coast the Forest Service closes a lot of campgrounds because they don't get used, they will close most in an area leaving centrally located ones open. I've never been the kind of camper that was restricted by seasons. When I was suction dredge mining in California before the ban, I was usually tent camping from April to November and by Qctober first the CGs were nearly empty, a few miners and a few full time RVers.

You never know what to expect at each COE campground. We have been fortunate and have not had to wait for our reserved site to become vacant, but that could happen at any time. We stay in COE parks a lot, and think they are the best; even with their late checkin times.
This morning around 10:00 am the host at Beard's Bluff Park near Ashdown, AR called us out of the blue and said the site we had reserved was now vacant and we could check in at any time. Now that's the first time that has happened! A lot of times we will call ahead and see if it is vacant, and sometimes we just get there and hope it is vacant. So far we have not had to wait, but expect it to happen one day, and we will just have to wait.
I still think it is absurd to have those late checkin times, but that's their method for whatever reason. Does anyone know the reasoning behind the late times?
Thanks,
