Look Rock Campground in GSMNP Re-Opens

A campground at Great Smoky Mountains National Park that has been closed for nine years has been reopened, park officials said.
g one of the park's most scenic drive, according to Superintendent Cassius Cash.

Look Rock Campground is a 68-site facility that provides camping alon
The campground opened Saturday and remains available through Nov. 13.

Look Rock Campground and Picnic Area were closed in 2013 after the water utility systems failed. The picnic area reopened with limited services after the park received funds in 2019 to install an accessible vault toilet.

The water system has now been completely replaced, with access to flush toilets and potable water. Campground sites were rehabilitated. Ten sites were renovated to accommodate larger recreational vehicles and offer the first electric and water hookups in a park campground, the park said.

The park received $4.7 million for the work from campground fees, donations and federal funds.

The campground is located along the Foothills Parkway between Walland, Tennessee, and Chilhowee Lake.

Campground reservations must be made through Recreation.Gov.

Thank you for the information. Cannot believe they spent $4.7M and didn't install showers.

Might have to make a trip real soon.

Spent 4 nights at Look Rock Campground last week. We got to talk to the contractor and it basically was the same old thing, "make it just like it was" is pretty much what he was told. End result, no attempt was made to level any of the sites that have lots of slope, the pavement still slopes the wrong way at the dump station, for getting your tanks empty, and there are still little areas of grass at the pull off sites and the dump station that get driven over and turn to mud (should have been filled with rock and paved over).

The restrooms are nice but there are still issues there. All in all, its nice to have more spaces in the GSMNP for camping, and the host, who had been at Elkmont said they really liked it compared to Elkmont or Cades Cove campgrounds. No attempt was made to fund at least one mens and one ladies shower, as this is a very tent/camper van/tiny trailer campground and really needs it.

Biggest problem is the people racing at high speed on the Foothills parkway at all hours of the day and night, same people who drive the Dragons's Tail, which is just past the south entrance to the parkway.

We saw several bears on the trip, most in Cades Cove, and the leaves were wonderful.

The campground closes on Nov 14th at noon and will reopen in the spring, probably in May. Sites will be $30 and $36 for the electric/water sites.
