Looking for overnight camping in Shenendoah area

We're headed to the Smoky Mountains and want to stop overnight a couple of times. The Shenendoah area around Harrisonburg/Winchester seems like it would put us at a comfortable drive/mileage for the day. Can anyone recommend a good campground with easy access to highway 81, for an overnight stay? Our second stop will be at Fort Chiswell - it's a nice campground easy access to the highway. Thanks.

Try Lee-Hi campground at exit 195 off I-81 in Lexington,Va......they have pull thrus and are behind a truck stop ,but don't let this bother you.....the campground is more than far enough away and the view is spectacular ..this will give you only 115 miles to Ft Chiswell the next day...
Another stop in West Va at exit 23 in Falling Waters is Falling Waters Campsites which is another decent campground and not as close to Ft Chiswell...Chuck

Looking for overnight camping in Shenendoah area

Skip Harrisonburg and go a few miles farther to KOA Stanton. A very nice park for over night sites and patio sites. We've stayed at the other KOA - tight difficult road to get in there, narrow more wooded sites. Not our preference.

Check out Green Valley Book Fair in Mt Crawford if you like books - cheap! Check their web for dates they are open.

Another Vote for Stanton KOA

I make that trip every year up and down I-81. The middle of Virginia seems to be my most convenient stopping point. Its a few miles off I-81 but the driving is easy. You can get pizza delivered to your site so DW doesn't have to cook. People are friendly and the place is clean. Thats all I need.
