Looking for stops along the way

My wife and I are full-timers currently in Waco, TX. In May, we will begin a 2 week trek to Estes Park, CO and want to take our time enjoying the trip up there. We are looking for some suggestions of neat places to spend a day or two or three along the way. Not travel parks, but scenic areas and attractions that we might enjoy. Also looking for suggestions on COE parks, NWR areas, State Parks, etc.

Looking forward to your suggestions.

Just South of Chama, NM is Heron Lake SP. In Chama you can take the old steam engine train to Antonito and back through the mountains.

Don't know what route you are thinking about, but when we left the Estes Park area (Loveland) we went east into NE and then south from there to visit friends in the RGV. Along the way we found Lake Lawtonka City Park:

Check the reviews, it is right on a lake just across from the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. We paid $8 a night senior and really enjoyed our stay.
