It is a little further out than some of the other parks, but we enjoyed staying there.

We always stay at Sweetwater for a couple of weeks. If you run out of time (max stay is two weeks) Lake Jennings is similar. A bit further away, but it is straight freeway to La Mesa so pretty quick.

My choice would be Santee Lakes (I live in San Diego county). Nice park, easy access, and close to La Mesa.
