Nolan Lake is very nice, small campground, but large level sits (electric and water) about a 15 minute drive to Mammoth caves. Most people only do 2-3 days tops in the park. Some only stop for the day.

I live just north of Wax. It and Dig Creek (a few miles away) are part of our "go to" locations. In KY the COE parks are generally nicer than SP.

More space, less crowded, better sites.

Will be winding down our 2 months trip from south N M wax COE park is close to Kentucky bike rally. I'm hoping for 5 good days of motorcycle riding around mammoth cave . Have you got any suggestions for Kentucky food and riding ?

Usually 4 nights at the national park campground right next door and 3-4 more at the near by Nolin Lake State Park. We average 3-4 cave tours. Many of the longer tours will cover what you see on the short 1/4 to 1 mile tours.

The popular tours you will want to reserve ahead of time. (Grand Ave tour 4 mile / 4 hours) and the Gothic Ave tour 1.5 miles / 2 hours and the Violet City Lantern Tour 3 miles / 3 hours...

** Be warned the Grand Ave tour is 4 miles / 4 hours and 700 steps. It is a work-out...wear good hiking type shoes because there are some steep slopes too. My favorite...

If you don't make reservations for tours ahead of time, get there early in the day and get tickets for a morning tour, and then one for later in the day. We like staying at the national park campground because it is a 5 minute bike ride to the caves.

If your up for a real adventuresome tour do the "Wild Cave Tour" 6 hours / 5 miles of "off-trail" fun. Must be under a size 42 suit to "fit" into many of the holes you will crawl thru. You may slide on your back for 100' feet. This tour must be reserved ahead of time as it fills "day of".
Looking into a trip here in August, and your post was really helpful. Thank you.

We stayed at Cave Country RV Park. It was really nice, clean and convenient to many things. I agree about the Corvette Museum. We really enjoyed it.
For Mammoth, we took two different tours - Domes and Dripstones and the Historic Tours. Be sure to read the descriptions on the tours carefully and you will be all good.
Have a great trip!
