Mesa Verde National Park in September

Looking for suggestions for the different tours (reservations required) within the Mesa Verde Park. We only have 1 day available for the park, so trying to see the best spots. Will be there mid September. As I understand it, I need to reserve the 'tours' 14 days in advance.

I already have a camping spot reserved outside the park, so that's handled. We will drive in with TOAD.

Interested in the cliff houses, hikes, etc. Moderate and distance hiking isn't a problem. Looking for suggestions. Thanks.

We always enjoyed the Balcony House but you can't go wrong with any of them. The whole place has fascinating history. Enjoy.

Thanks. We're torn between that and Cliff house.

The cliff palace tour is the best in my opinion. It does require some climbing on the way out if thatís a problem.

I called it house, But it is 'Palace'.

We were in Yosemite in June and a reservation was required back then just to get in. Only $2, but if you didn't have one, they turned you away at the gate. Yosemite can get pretty crowded during the season.

I don't see that requirement anywhere for MV. Does anyone know?

I assume you've thoroughly read the park's web site.... lots of good information.

Things are always changing in the parks nowadays especially with entrance fees, reservations, etc. so if you don't see an answer it's best to call the park for correct information. Also, by next year there may be yet other changes. Also, fires, weather and road repairs are up for grabs. Check right before going.

Mesa Verde

I was there in June. The tours require a reservation.Iím told that when the reservation window opens they book up unbelievably fast (like <minute). There are plenty of sights to see without a tour. You can hike down to Step House, the only cliff dwelling you can see without a tour ticket. There are many overlooks and hikes however. Go early in the morning as the sun is brutal at that elevation. Take a picnic lunch as the dining option are limited.

Once you enter the park it is a 30 minute drive to get to anything. Itís quite a magnificent place. The Pueblo culture is very interesting as well.

Our first trip to Mesa Verde was in the '60s and we have been back many times since. But the best tour we ever took was to Long House on Weatherill Mesa. After your tour, you are very close to Step House, which you can tour on your own. If you then want to drive all the way down to Cliff Palace, you can view and photograph it from an overlook.

If you have kids with you, a great place to visit the afternoon before your tour is the Anasazi Heritage Center, just west of Dolores. It is interactive, with a very good introductory movie, hands-on artifacts' viewing through microscopes, and two small ruins right next to the parking lot. It's a not-to-be missed, five stars on Trip Advisor, introduction to the culture that you can't get at Mesa Verde itself.

Best check with the park service there. We just cancelled a week trip there because most exhibits are closed, again, and there is going to be a ton of road closures and construction going on in September.
