I was there a few weeks back, and that gate issue got me as well. The main gate is open to RVs at Wright-Patterson, and the guard was not even a little surprised to see me pull up.
Note: the Famcamp is slow to respond to emails--a phone call is always best!

Militarycampgrounds.us is a great source in general but particularly for routing. Calling ahead is a good idea to verify...but be aware the person you are talking to may have no earthly idea what its like to get an RV in and around a base. For example, Holloman AFB you can do the main gate or the commercial gate - but the commercial gate is soooo much easier and is more critical to avoiding possible damage the bigger you are.

Also, if you have an RV that is over 40 feet make sure you tell them and make sure you get a confirmation. Just a week ago I had reservations for Williamsburg. I read the fine print in the confirmation email and it said 40Ft RV. I called to correct it and I was told they could not accommodate an RV over 40Ft. When I made the reservation in May I can assure you I told them I had a 43 Foot RV. I always tell when making reservations.
If you have any special needs make sure you tell them and hopefully get it in writing.

The web site everyone is recommending has more info and should be more current then the book sold in Px's. Also as some have mentioned it is a good idea to call famcamp for latest security info in place. May have a different gate with set hrs to use. We have been boarded, inspected, X-ray, drove over in bedded cameras. But its all good. When we stay for more then a few days..its on base. ALso the Militarycampground web site and even the famcamp web site may be way out of date. Happy Trails

Its been a mixed bag for us using Famcamps….some camps are is decline will others are being rebuilt.....In general, fees are good but not great....sometimes a hassle to get on/off base with rig....or the famcamp is located well off the beaten path....depending on time of year, reservations ban be/are hard to get.....planning ahead for reservations may work better but on the fly, not so much......as for Wis, suggest Camp McCoy in southwest/west side toward Lacrosse....not located on the base so easy in and out....

There are several military campgrounds around the VA Beach/Williamsburg area. I've heard good things about the Cheatham Annex one, but I haven't stayed there.
We stayed at Ft. Story over Memorial Day. It's a rustic, shady, and quiet campground, only 27 sites, including the 3 camping cabins. Water and electric. Bathhouse and free laundry. It suited us. Ft. Story is on the very north end of VA Beach, close to the Bay Bridge/Tunnel. Beach access is via a long walk or a very short drive.
We drove to Little Creek campground. It had full hookups, concrete pads and was on the part of the joint base where the NEX and commissary were located. However, it backs up to Route 60. If you're in a tent, popup, or hybrid, it might be a bit noisy.

Had confirmation for Dam Neck in Middle of July for 2 nights. Cancellation no gives us 6 nights and that is what I planned for after Cheetham Annex rescinded and said they could not accommodate a 43 foot rv.

I'm kind of thinking that the 40 ft refers to the length of the concrete pad. From the photos and video, it looks like a 43 ft would fit easily enough.
At any rate, I'm glad you were able to get reservations for Dam Neck. Every time I've looked, they've been booked.
RVUSANewbie - I think getting in the military campgrounds in the summer might be your biggest challenge. If possible, consider getting reservations.

We've found that with COE and SP the length restriction has more to do with maneuvering in getting to site then the actual site accommodation. Turns of road and tree obstructions.
When at Hunting Island SP I watched two 40+ footers tear the rear caps loose on pine tree on curve in road. It you kept the frt wheels on the pavement, there was no way you could keep rear swing from smacking the tree. Tree was scared for many contacts.
I give the park ranger hell for not doin something about it. She said: "Not her job".

I looked at the satellite view and the video on the military review web site. I agree that it appears longer the 40ft could be accommodated.
I called the reservation number and asked a few questions. They contacted the annex and stated that the concrete pads are 40ft.
My front and rear jacks are 24 feet apart and would fit towards back or front of the cement pad. I probably should not have questioned the 40ft length. However, I would have hated showing up and having to turn around.
I have left a message with the manager and hope that they will call me back.
p.s., It may be that they don't allow an overhang at the back of the pad. Video does show a 5er overhanging. It also shows a trailer with an 18 wheeler tractor for a TV.
