Mount Rushmore

Anyone out there been to Mount Rushmore? We looking to go in 2021 and are wondering what is the best time of year to go. Also, suggestions on nearby campgrounds.

First trip back in the 80s was very nice,,, no crowds, no problem finding a place to stay. Out last trip was in July 2019 and was definitely different than the first. A lot of people but not too overwhelming. Places to stay however, were expensive and a bit harder to come by. Plan ahead and get your reservations early.

If no kids involved, I'd try to go either before school let out for the summer or after it started back up.

We stayed at Stone Mountain Park Campground summer of 2019. Had a site overlooking the lake. Very nice and of course convenient to Stone Mountain Park. Very patriotic event at the Mountain that we very much enjoyed.

Be aware 1st week of August is the Sturgis Rally , so anything in a 50 mi. radius will be full of Harley's , which includes Spearfish and Mt. Rushmore.

I'd definitely avoid the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally which will be Aug 6-15, 2021... and perhaps a week before & after. It's a traffic, RV park, restaurant mess at that time and if Covid is still around it's definitely a 'spreader event'.

September is a very nice time to be there. Vacationers thin out and weather is good.

Visited the area , last few days of Sept the year we went , no crowds , weather pleasant ; BUT ; RV parks were starting to winterize just prior to shutting down .
We stayed in Rapid City , park owner said Oct.10 was his last day open , water system for 2/3 of the park , was shut down and drained.

Went 2 yrs ago on the bike during Sturgis. You don’t go no where fast and sometimes can’t stop to see the sights. Avoid that timeframe.
We were on a budget, so we took the economy sight seeing tour around the backside.

I would consider June as one of the best times to go. While you are there do not miss Wind Caves National Park or Badlands National Park. Another not to be missed place is Custer State Park. So much to do and see in the Black Hills region. As for campgrounds Buffalo Ridge is a excellent choice. If you like less crowded conditions go in late August or early September.

I agree, be sure to visit Badlands. A sight that’s hard to describe. A Star Trek scene. That was my favorite stop of the whole week.

Lived in Rapid city for four years and have been back many times. Every time more congestion and higher prices for every thing. Looks like you have a tow vehicle which is good since there is considerable distance between things you will want to see. Rushmore is about a half day visit. Crazy Horse has been commercialized and is expensive. Dead work was ruined by the gambling but work a look if just for Boot Hill. Wall also is worth a short visit and is near the Badlands. There is a decent campground there. The bike rally in August just turns the whole area into a massive traffic jam. The campground. The KOA near the freeway in Rapid is nothing special but is near restaurants and shopping. Makes a good place to start from. So many things in that area you could spend several weeks and not see everything.

We went to Mt Rushmore the last week of August 2020. Weather was cool, crowds were not what they are when kids are out of school. We were staying at Buckhorn in Spearfish, about 30 or so miles west of Rapid City.

Regards.

Chuck
