Rafter J is my absolute favorite in the area since it's location is in the middle of everything..very big piece of property with wide open spaces...you can't go wrong there...Located at the inspection of US 385/ US16 & State Rd. 244 the road to Mt. Rushmore..their # 605-574-2527

The KOA in Rapid city is not bad and is in a good location close to shopping and resturants.

I just did a quick Google and came up with this:

Good luck finding a place with openings!

Rush-no-more campground near Sturgis. Exit 37. About 40 miles from Mt. Rushmore.

We stayed at Custer Gulch RV park last week. It was a great place located just outside Custer State Park. Large sites with easy access. Don't forget to see Mt Rushmore lighting ceremony. It was fantastic.

We've stayed there three times. Good location for day trips.

We were there last July,
We liked Rushmore Shadows.
They give you 3 free nights if you watch their membership video and presentation.
Hey 3 free = $ 275-300

A few years back we stayed at "Fort Welikit" out side of the city of Custer.
https://www.blackhillsrv.com/
It was close to everything but yet far enough away also.

We stayed at Palmer Gulch KOA on our way back from Yellowstone. Nice park, very clean bath houses, close to Rushmore. Very busy place though and not much cell service.

We spent almost 2 weeks in Rapid City, and was at Rushmore for Memorial Day. We were changing our state of residency to SD and stayed in Americas Mailbox campground. It is in Box Elder on the north side of I-90 about 4 miles from Ellsworth AFB. One of the best campgrounds we seen was Elkhorn in Spearfish. Really beautiful park, nicely laid out.
Chances of finding an opening is going to be rough, in a tourist area, on a short notice, good luck.

Also depending on which direction you are coming from, stop in Wall Drug. Plus do a drive thru the Badlands National Park in that area.

First I use Campendium.com - for Custer - https://www.campendium.com/south-dakota/custer - Down the road a bit and many options - just start calling.

IMHO Custer is the center of the area - and in your situation just find a Spot!

Let us know how you do, any spot is fine as you will be there very little of the time.

Enjoy - so much to see never enough TIME!
